I’m a UK size 8 and this is a free pattern which is also available here on Burda Style – Partly Sunny Frock.

African ‘kitenge’ fabric and a sheer satin type for the yoke. That part was a nightmare

Your dress is fantastic! I have been thinking about this pattern however, the yoke looks like a bear to make. Do you have any advise?

Thanks so much! And yes – the yoke part was definitely the hardest. My honest advice – for the first time doing it at least – wold be to do the yoke in a different colour cotton. That way, you still get a co-ordinating dress but it would be FAR easier. Especially if you are relatively new to dressmaking (I was and using the chiffon / voile was just so hard to deal with.). You will see that the back of mine was done in a cotton. I stuck with it for the front but even now I don;t like the way it looks (the chiffon is so delicate and is kind of ‘pulling’ when I hang up the dress). Oh – and the other technique I used, was that I didn’t try to seam in the sweetheart bit of the yoke on the chiffon, I just overstitched it if you get me (by making the yoke piece a lot bigger and just having excess fabric within the dress itself. Like I say though – in hindsight I probably wish I had just used a cotton like I did on the back. Good luck!
