My Pink Edwardian Movie Costume Reproduction!

Added Feb 23, 2012

Portland, Oregon...

This is one of my most adventurous sewing projects up till now – recreating the “honeymoon dress” which Diana Barry wore in the 1987 classic film “Anne of Avonlea”. It was a gorgoues Edwardian design from this movie which was set in 1902.

So after meticulous study of film stills and a lot of going through my antique lace collection, I was able to embark on the weeks-long process of constructing a replica of this gown.

I used a variety of patterns, including the sleeve pattern from Liesl’s Dancing Dress

The gown came together very nicely, and I did much of the sewing by hand.

When it was finished, I sent pictures in to Sullivan Entertainment (the company that produced the movie in the first place), and they liked it so much that they put pictures of the gown on their website and Facebook page!

Needless to say, I was just thrilled with the way the dress and the pictures turned out, and it you’d like to read all about the construction and see more photos, you can see the full post here .

I’d love to hear your thoughts on the dress, and I hope some fellow Anne Shirley fans will enjoy the project as much as I have.

Happy sewing,

Material Notes

I used a peachy-pink bengaline moire’ for the gown itself, and the front panel has an inset of pintucked cotton voile. Antique laces are used on the bodice and for the collar, and there is a panel of embroidered netting which covers half of each sleeve cuff. I splurged on the buttons and used pearl buttons with tiny Swarovski crystals in the center of each, but other than this detail the entire thing was authentic.
