My Makondo Shift Dress

Added Jun 9, 2013

Rio, Brazil

The pattern is Jamie Shift Dress from BurdaStyle Sewing Vintage Modern Book.
First time I saw it, I have decided to make one for me!
The fabric is a wax print named Makondo.
It came in a package of 6 yards as usually happens with wax prints.
Not sure what I am going to do with all of it!
I also would have preferred to have it in other colors but this was the only one available.
I have liked so much the print that I have decided to bought it anyway.

Since the print is big, I had to study the different results that were possible with the same fabric and pattern.
Even though I knew that the lengthwise cut results in better fabric movement, I have decided to cut the fabric in the crosswise grain which made it possible an interesting geometrical result.
The fabric is almost no stretchy on crosswise grain what may help.
Front and back facing were cut in lengthwise direction to avoid distortion.

Almost finishing the dress, I have realized that there was no need of zipper.
And since I am not a zipper fan, I found it difficult to wear and difficult to sew, I have decided to eliminate it.
So this is my no zipper version of Jamie Shift Dress.

Notes from image update:
I have finally included photos wearing the dress!
They were taken at Sao Cristovao Market, a place for northeast brazilian food, crafts and music in Rio de Janeiro.

Material Notes

Cotton wax print
I have eliminated the zipper.

You mean, buy the fabric online?
      Search for wax print fabric.
There is a well known online supplier called Vlisco.

Novice really! this look wonderful. You did great. Clever to omit the zipper but dont let that intimate you in the future. You can find lot of how to vids onthe net. Zippers are really a can-do. Again, congrats on this desing.

Thank you, Raidergirl! I still find zippers tricky but the pattern is quite simple. The challenge was to find the right cut for the print! I did some sketches before cutting but I had only a clue of the final result.

Wunderschön! Hast du die Streifen alle zusammen genäht (wie Patchwork) oder ist es ein fertiger Stoff mit Streifen?
