My Larissa Makes Me Happy

Added Apr 12, 2010

London, United K...

For a long time I have had in mind a plaid Larissa, originally planning for red and black.. but on my fabric hunting expeditions this amazingly soft and obnoxiously bright clashy plaid kept calling me back. Goldhawk Road, how I love you so!

It’s definitely the most complicated thing I have sewn so far and took me about a month, but it was a joy to figure out and to finally accomplish. Matching up the plaid was mind-bending and eye-crossing, that last glass of wine was not very useful when trying to correctly line up those slanting princess seams. Lengthened the bodice by three inches, kinda wish I had also made the waist band a bit wider too, by hey ho. Also lengthened the arms. Over-all, I am really happy with it, it is super warm and cosy and feels great to wear. Just wish I had finished it in autumn instead of spring!

Thank you to the girls at our sewing club for talking me away from my mismatched plastic zips and into John Lewis for quality chunky metal zips, they really do take the jacket to the next level.

Material Notes

Amazingly soft (and 50% off, yay!) plaid wool from Goldhawk rd, hot pink satin lining (which the sales guy was trying to talk me out of and into something more ‘sophisticated’, phffft!), chunky brown metal zips and studs, quite thick iron on inter-lining for extra warmth and a better hang, and a pair of small shoulder pads.

Garment Type
Satin, Wool

Hey, sorry I didn’t reply earlier, it’s been ages since I logged in. It wasn’t the easiest of patterns, but I enjoyed the challenge and the instructions are actually pretty good if I remember correctly, nothing a bit of logic couldn’t solve. I think the hardest part was matching the plaid, but that issue is down to personal preference, if you go plain you’ll have no problems.

Ooh, the zipper bit’s were quite fiddly, but go slowly, patiently and you will get there.

Did you say you want to go leather? I think that’s a totally different beast, you’d need quite a hefty machine I’d reckon. Any way if you do do it, please let me see the results! Good luck. ;)

Thanks for the advicea about fabric shops on Goldhawke Rd – I ventured down there to get some wool for the jacket I’m about to attempt (and managed to find the fabric you made your coat from!)

      Oh nice!
I felt bad because there wasn’t too much on the roll and they were trying to sell me the last metre or so but I had to hold firm because I already have a problem with too much left over stuff..
What jacket are you going to do and did you find the wool you want?

Can you post the brand of those gorgeous zippers? As you say, they make all the difference! I have held off starting my own Larissa b/c I can’t find zippers I think will make the project look high fashion rather than home-sewn. Thanks. (are you in the UK? I am in the US, so it may not help me to know the brand if it’s a Brit company, but you never know)

Hey. Sorry I didn’t rely earlier, it’s been months since I last logged in. The brand is called OPTI and I bought them from John Lewis, a department store here in the UK. They have an online presence, I am not sure if you can order haperdashery through them, I’m sure you could try. Hope that helps and that you get all the stuff you need to make a brilliant jacket!

Thank you! re t’shirt – Burdastyle had a networking event over here in London while they were visiting Europe, it was great fun to meet everyone and they generously loaded me up with t-shirts and other fun Burdastyle stuff for the BSC i’m involved with.
