Description

This is my first and probably the last shirt dress, as I really hate making buttonholes…
The applique embellishments are made of imitation leather scraps and topstiched by hand.
As you see I’ve only kept the bodice pattern, the skirt is quite simple .

Hi Elpida! I love how this turned out and am going to try this pattern. How much fabric did you need to make this?

To be honest, I don’t remember exactly…. I think it was less than 2.5 m. I admire your work and I’m looking forward to your version :-)

Hahaha I feel your pain! Made something with buttonholes once and promised myself I wouldn’t do it again. I’m always trying to adapt a pattern to omit any buttons hihi The result is beautiful though, your dress looks professional! (as usual!)

Another wonderful creation from you, Elpida. The appliqué is gorgeous. Ha ha though – I’m like you…buttonholes are my nemesis! I have an auto buttonholer on my machine, which won’t work with most things (too thin, too thick, too uneven, etc). It’s a shame because I never had a problem with my old, non-computerised machine that had a four-step buttonholer!!!

My machine is non-computerised but the four step buttonholes are very frustrating and produce very poor result. This time I tried to hand stich the buttonholes after watching youtube tutorials claiming it’s a piece of cake! It took me a whole evening and I promised I won’t do it again till I buy a new computerised machine!!!!

Oh no!!! That’s some task! I ended up buying some kind of buttonholer stabiliser plate to put on my machine but I haven’t tried it yet. Another Janome accessory though to add to the stable! I have done manual ones before, where you sew a tack at each end and two rows of stitching in between, but I bet you’ve tried that!

It looks amazing on you.Like the expensive boutique style.I love it on you so much. And you gave me desire to start with applique too!!!Did you drew the flowers yourself(before putting them on fabric? or you printed them out from a website??

Thank you Kira! Actually, this is the second time I try applique and it’s not at all hard. Using the right fabric is very important. Imitation leather is ideal because it doesn’t fray. The basis fabric also helped, as it had a pretty good hold. This time I used fabric glue to stabilize pieces and then hand stiched them around. I think they look better plus that I’m not good at machine topstitching.
Yes, I drew the flowers myself….

I love it! And the appliques are really cool. I hate buttonholes too, but love shirt dresses, so I endure in silence :D, maybe you love wearing this one enough to change your mind too ;)
