My Easy Travel Wedding Dress

London, United K...

I needed a slim line wedding dress which I can make within 8 weekends and found Burda March 2010 issue’s dress 108 after reviewing tonnes of wedding dress patterns. I learnt various techniques through Susan Khalje’s Bridal Couture book, Kenneth D King’s Birth of the Bustier book and Gertie’s Bombshell dress online class. I followed the pattern mostly except for elimination of the centre front seam on the bodice and the back bow which I omitted. I also personalised the dress by adding lace trims which I beaded.

You can see more details of the dress on my blog:

I also did a tutorial on how I made my veil:

And lastly, I added this post about the practice boned bodices which I made before starting this wedding dress DIY journey in here:

Material Notes

Polyester Duchess Satin, Tulle, Corded Lace Trim, Crystals, Pearl Beads, Boning, Habotai lining

Please do! I’d love to see the process! hm I’ve never sewed with boning, but I guess it’s kind of redundant in day to day garments. Thanks!

Wow this is amazing! I’m so impressed you had the guts to make your own dress! you must have been so proud of yourself! I can imagine this made made your wedding day even more special. I’m so envious, I think I’m going to try my sewing my own dress when I get married, thankfully this won’t happen anytime soon so I have plenty of time to work on my sewing skills :) Do you have any major pointers for sewing a wedding dress? I can’t imagine working with such delicate fabrics, I’d always be so afraid I’d do something wrong and ruin the whole thing.. Amazing!

I think Susan Khalje’s bridal couture book is a must read! You can buy the book in cd format from her website. I also did some experiments before to practice sewing with boning. I can post some pics of the practice bodice to my blog if that’s useful. :)

8 week are you serious! I’d have crumbled under that time pressure.

You did a lovely lovey job here…all the elements work so nicely together…this looks in no way home constructed (which I always think is the biggest sewing compliment).

Thank you!! I did quite a bit of beading after work so that helps a bit. I think i Became faster once I got into the rhythm of the hand stitching :)

You should definitely try! It’s such a great opportunity to learn new techniques and have a real customised dress.

Gorgeous dress!!! I also have 8 weeks to my wedding, but I don’t have the guts to make my own dress :-( I think I would either not make it in time or drive myself crazy

Congrat to you too! I did drive my hubby crazy though because I was either sewing or beading every weekends!

Thank you! I found that burda’s sizing suits me quite well. Didn’t need to do a lot of adjustments.
