Modest Homecoming Dress

This dress was made for my daughter’s homecoming dance. The dress is based on Simplicity 3878 but for modesty purposes, we used the bodice from New Look 6824 with the sleeve modified to a full cap sleeve. The neckline was also adjusted to a comfortable level. The skirt and cumberbund (waistband) are Simplicity 3878. Unfortunately, we didn’t purchase enough of the skirt overlay fabric and so the overlay is not as full as the pattern suggests. I also made the waistband shorter than the original pattern. It was necessary to do a FBA (which I still haven’t quite figured out how to do correctly, as the bustline doesn’t fit quite right.) It is lined and has a tulle ruffle on the skirt lining to help the skirt stand out. I hemmed the sheer overlay by hand based on a tutorial from one of my sewing magazines (I can’t remember which one).
I didn’t start making it as early as I should have, so some of it was rushed – I didn’t have time to solve the fitting issues and we didn’t have time to get additional fabric for the overlay.
She loved the dress at the dance, she was so comfortable – she didn’t have to pull at a gaping neckline and there is no boning to poke her and the skirt was fun and flirty.

Material Notes

The fabric is Blue Jewel from the Casa Collection at Joann’s. I used the Satin for the dress and Organza with translucent beads for the overlay. The lining is the basic lining. I wish they had a line of zippers that matched this collection, because finding a zipper that blended was difficult. I purchased the fabric online when it was half price.

It’s great that she could have fun at the dance and not worry about her dress! Looks nice!
