ModCloth Handmade Contest - Hat & Gloves Set

Added Dec 17, 2010

Wonderland, Unit...

I don’t normally sew accessories, but this contest inspired me to step out of my comfort zone and try something new.

As most of Modcloth’s collection is vintage inspired I thought the perfect accompaniment to their clothes would be a matching hat and gloves set – something to add an extra touch of elegance (and polka dotted playfulness) to a beautiful outfit.

I made the set as an early christmas present for myself out of black fleece and polka dot jersey (recycled from an old t-shirt). This is my first ever attempt at making gloves and they are completely hand sewn, which was a challenge I enjoyed. They are based on an original 1950s sewing pattern, with some adjustments and bows added by myself. I drafted the hat pattern from scratch to match the gloves, again a new experience for me – I’ve made a couple of fascinators before but never a full hat.

The set would go well with many ModCloth clothes, for example their Casserole Queens Dress and Flurry De Lis Coat

Thank you so much, I found a glove pattern in a 50s issue of Burda magazine and used that as the basis for them, adding the bows myself
