Military coat 08/2011 #102

Dublin, Ireland

Military style coat. Wool mix for jacket. Lined with Japanese fabric. I had intended to line the jacket with red but decided to use this bright fabric which was a gift from tokyo. It certainly adds an unusual touch, but isn’t that what making your own clothes is all about? It was time consuming but pretty straight forward to make, but I didn’t enjoy doing the piping. (I’m not very experienced at making clothes) I made the piping quite chunky on purpose as the coat reminded me too much of the Garda (police) coat worn here in Ireland and I felt the red needed to be more prominent.

Thank you Ellen. This is a fantastic site. I had a peek at your projects today. You are so talented! I love your butterfly dress. Can I ask is it a fabric you cut butterflies out of and then sewed them to your dress? I have used inktense pencils to create a butterfly cushion and I would love to use them on a dress now having seen your beautiful creation. But I’m not sure how well it would wash…

Thank you – that’s nice to hear ;) The butterflies is cut out of a fabric and I use applique paper with glue on two sides so you can iron them on your project and then sew it on, and paper underneath when you are sewing so you can rip away afterwords. Maybe you can try washing one butterfly you have made before sewing them to the project.. Wishing you good luck!

Thank you. It closes with hooks and eyes. I would of liked to be experienced enough to attempt changing it to a zip. Maybe next time!
