Messenger Bag

Added Dec 8, 2009

by xnickerxje

Lelystad, Nether...

I think I finally perfected my favorite design for a messenger bag. This one is without decoration. Now that I got the design down, I can work on making it less plain.

In the meantime, this one is going off as a Christmas present.

Material Notes

corduroy, cotton, interfacing, couple zippers, slide toggle

Garment Type
Casual, Classic, Other, Preppy
Corduroy, Cotton

My own design.

Ooh, this is wonderful! I love the choice of corduroy and the topstitching. And it’s definitely not plain :)

I unfortunately don’t have any instructions other than the pencil scratches on the back of an envelope and my quickie tissue paper pattern pieces. :(

It is, in essence, a typical messenger bag. Mods I added were:

      • zipper pocket on outer back- I made sure to sew in a flap so the zipper teeth didn’t rub clothing.
      • inset zipper in the main section (not shown in my pics), you can find some great instructions on how to do this here: http://u-handbag.typepad.com/uhandblog/2008/08/easy-tutorial—-how-to-insert-a-concealed-top-edge-bag-zipper.html
      • angled front pocket: I took the same pattern piece as the front, drew on a line at an angle, cut 1 of outer fabric, cut 1 of lining on reverse, sewed across the top then turned and topstitched, basted sides and bottom to the front of the bag to keep from slipping (matching edges), and then sewed the two vertical lines to divide the pocket into thirds.
      • corner flap cut offs- I just cut the edges off to add character rather than the traditional square flap
      • I top stitched everything in white using a denim stitch on my machine. The line ends up pretty bold.
      • I used 200 weight interfacing on every single piece of fabric: outer, lining, and the strap. I wanted to add stiffness to the fabric without resorting to cardboard inserts, and I wanted to keep it soft enough that it will mold to the wearer with use.

I really like this! Do you mind if I copy it? I’m sure my ex would love something like this as a laptop bag. And great choice of lining fabric!

Wow, that’s a very cool bag! I first thought it was leather, but corduroy makes it more snugly ;-) Lucky one who will get this for Christmas!
