Malia's Leather Jacket

Added Dec 31, 2010

by Malia J

Ontario, Canada

Modified vogue pattern, deer hide leather jacket. Fully topstitched and lined, including sleeve zippers, front zipper and snaps. Underarm seams taped down, and edges of seams clipped on an angle to reduce bulk.
This was my first time working with leather and i was unaware that the leather i chose was thicker than most jackets would usualy be made with and would turn out more like a motorcycling jacket, which wasnt really the look i was going for, but i rather like the way it turned out anyways!

and your sewing machine? Was it easy to sew? You wrote the leather was thicker than you expected. I also made a vest in leather and had sometimes my problems with the thick seams. The jacket is absolutely terrific – perfect work. I am totally impressed.

thanks!! i found my leather got very bulky at some spots also, trimming the edges of the seam allowances on an angle really recuded bulk and also i used these wooden hammer like things to flatten the extremely bulky areas. sorry im not sure what the hammer things are called though :s

I’m fond of this design. Kelepso’s right… There’s no default on it!

I’d like to sew leather. Did you use a special sewing machine ? Or special needles ?

      thanks!! :D
i used my normal sewing machine and normal needles, except for a few extra bulky areas i used a leather needle.

wonderful! i love surplice zippers and plackets so this is amazing, especially since it mimicks the other princess seam. beautiful, you can just see how much thought and care went into constructing this.

Fantastic! And I love the inside-out picture. That always the most interesting part for me and very few people think of taking pictures of it :)
