Long Sleeved Jersey Dress – BurdaStyle 07/2011 #103

I have been learning so much about the nature of lace! I sewed two versions of this dress, because I messed up the first attempt which was sewn using a 4-way stretch lace remnant I found in the thrift store. While it had a pretty floral pattern and a soft feel, that lace was on the extremely stretchy scale, and was probably suited more for making leggings. I found it to be the most difficult fabric I’ve tried sewing with, as it moved everywhere, and curled at every hem and seam, stretching way out. For my replacement version of this dress I used a synthetic but stable 2-way (width wise) stretch lace, which was on sale. Sewing it was a cinch this time, and I opted to hem all the edges using zigzag. The dress feels roomy and soft from the wrong/inner side, however there are silver thread highlights woven in on the right/outer side. I didn’t use enclosed/french seams which is fine for the looser sides, but if the more closer fitting armhole and shoulder inner seams feel at all itchy against the skin I may need to bind them. I did use polyester organza ribbon to stay the shoulder seams. I didn’t double up the layers for the lower arm of the sleeve, and instead just left it single, but it works ok. Btw, it is definitely dress fabric and wasn’t in the curtaining section of the craft store, lol. Location: Westmere

Material Notes

white synthetic cross wise stretch lace dress fabric with silver thread highlights & a vertical pattern, white polyester ribbon.
