Little Black Dress Inspired by Givenchy

Added Oct 25, 2009

UPDATE: I’ve posted the pattern for this dress on my blog as a free pdf download. Check it out here

This is a little black dress I made, inspired by the Hubert de Givenchy floor length gown worn by Audrey Hepburn in the movie Breakfast at Tiffany’s. I was also inspired by Myk’s adorable “At Tiffany’s” dress which used a similar neckline on a babydoll styled dress. After seeing it, I envisioned the neckline and cutout back on a slim sheath.

I drafted the pattern for this dress using part of the lining pattern for dress 125 from the 5/08 issue of Burda Modemagazin. It’s made of black wool suiting and lined with black lightweight taffeta. For more photos and info, check out my brand new blog, The Selfish Seamstress.

Great job and wonderful result. It’s a professional dress, the kind you find only in hig fashion boutique!!! If one is lucky! You are very talented if you can draw inspiration from what you see and design the pattern you like!

wow! i love it! i had the same urge to make a sheath dress after seeing Myk’s version. but i can never envision myself in a neckline that high (the back shape seem to require a high front neckline, otherwise it feels like theres not enough fabric to allow the dress to be tight).

but now i want to make one too :P:P

anyway, love the name of your blog!! i am totally guilty of the same thing. i never feel too motivated to sew if its not for me :( so whenever people ask me to make them stuff, i offer to teach them how to make it (it is a sincere offer since i love to have more sewing buddies). but most people are too “lazy” or “not talented” (their excuses) to try and learn :(
