Lady Gaga Origami Dress

Added Jun 7, 2010

by meegie-moo

Brisbane, Australia

I recently celebrated my 25th Birthday with a ‘Film & Music’ inspired theme. So i decided to go as Lady Gaga and made my own outfit!

I also made a disco stick with much help from the following tutorial :-http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GqoPKPIXo_Y&feature=relat

This was my first attempt at making a costume. I am a beginner sewer having only made a few dresses and basc skirts.

This outfit took approximately 50 hours to make. But it was worth it in the end!!

Material Notes

1.5m Vinyl
3 sheets of large cardboard to make the diamonds
Glitter spray for the diamons
irrigation hose to make the skirt hoop
Velcro for the skirt to attach the diamonds
eyelets and 4m ribbon for the corest back

Garment Type
Leather/Fur, Other

wow! I’ve been trying to find a Lady Gaga costume that I could wear at this event that takes place when Finnish high school students are done with school and where they all dress up in all kinds of costumes, climb to these huge trailer trucks, drive around the city and throw candy for kids. And after that they party hard, of course! Well ANYWAY, the point of my story was that these pictures of the dress you made inspired me to try and make a similar dress to wear at the event. :D Thank you for inspiring me! :)

Totally, utterly amazing! You could make loads by replicating her wardrobe as well as you did this dress!

I have been planning on making a version of this costume for Halloween and happened to stumble across your project! You did such an amazing job!! I do, however, have a couple of questions: 1. How exactly did you attach the origami crystals? I was thinking of sewing the crystals on a piece of fabric/ribbon and then hot gluing them into place (to add stability and to minimize movement). You said you used velcro? Did that work? Did they move around a lot? 2. Was 2 yards enough fabric to use? I just want to make sure I have enough to make the entire dress (just so you know I am a total novice sewer). 3. What type of thread/needle did you use to sew this?

Thank you so much! Love what you did! You look hot!

this is amazing! I was wondering if you velcroed each origami diamond individually to the dress or did you put them all together onto something and stick that on? and were they able to stay facing up for the most part on their own?

that is so cool :) very good for a beginner! how did you do the diamonds? they look like plastic more then cardboard…(I think that’s good :D) and – did you made the dress pattern by yourself? (it’s amazing!)

      Hey thanks for your comment.

I used this tutorial to help me with the diamonds:-

I did make the dress pattern by myself. I actually didn’t have a dressmakers dummy when i was constructing the top (i later borrowed this one from my bf’s Mum) so I used a singlet top as a basic guide and then put it up to my body and used the pinch and pin method for the darts – not the most comfortable way to create it but it worked!
