The project: Jumpy play suit

What you’ll need:
•Sewing machine
•Ballpoint machine needle (for knits)
•Straight pins
•Measuring tape
•2 large T-shirts
•Stretch lace
•Elastic 2.5 cm (1”) wide

Make the shorts:

Step 1: Draw the pattern for your shorts onto the two T-shirts. Keep in mind that the bottom section of the shirt will be the bottom of the shorts.

Step 2: With your four pieces, place two right sides together, pin them, and sew the centre seam. This forms the front of the shorts. Repeat with the remaining two pieces of T-shirt material.

Step 3: Place the two panels right sides together and sew up the side seams.
Make the waistband:

Step 1: Cut a strip of stretch lace 10 to 15 cm (4 to 6″) long. The strip should be long enough to fit around your hips when stretched. Fold the strip of lace in half (with right sides together) and sew together.

Step 2: Place the strip over the shorts with right sides together. Make sure to match up the side seams. Pin and secure the two pieces, and sew them together all the way around.

Make the tube top:

Step 1: Using the remainder of the shirts to create the tube top, cut off the bottom of the shirt, then fold the top in half. Cut off the neckline and sleeves, and unfold. This should produce two rectangles.

Step 2: Sew the two side seams up. Next, place the tube top over the waistband with right sides together, matching side seams as you go.

Step 3: Place the fabric on your sewing machine, and as you sew, stretch the lace to match the size of your tube top. Cut another piece of lace as wide as you’d like (we went with 18 cm, 7″), fold it in half with right sides together, and sew the side seam.

Step 4: Put the lace inside the tube top with its right side facing the wrong side of the tube top. Sew all the way around. Next, pull the lace from the inside outward and then cut a piece of elastic according to your measurements for the top of your bust. Sew ends together.

Step 5: Place the elastic near the seam of the lace and shirt, and sew to the inside of the shirt.
Make the bow:

Step 1: Using T-shirt scraps to make the bow, cut two rectangles. Sew with right sides together and flip inside out.

Step 2: Fold the rectangle in half. Sew the top edge together and flip inside out. Next, cut out two small rectangles with a piece of fabric. Sew the longer top and bottom edges with right sides together, leaving the sides open. Turn right side out, and then insert the lace into the small fabric square and pull halfway through until you have a bow.

Sewing tip: Sewing knits with a regular needle can cause damage to your fabric or tear the fabric fibers. Make sure you purchase a ballpoint sewing machine needle, specifically made for sewing knits, before starting your project.
