i carry your heart with me Dress

Added Dec 10, 2011

by CationDesigns

Los Angeles, Cal...

I made a simple white dress with a fishtail skirt, trimmed with narrow black bias tape. The hem swoops from above the knee in front to almost at my ankles in the back. I used a fabric marker to write the words of E.E. Cummings’ “i carry your heart with me” poem along the hem. To emphasize the carrying of a heart, I drew a heart onto another piece of fabric and fused it to the dress, then added red stitching along the outside.

This project was purely self-gratification, as I love this poem (and anatomy). The dress is a little much, though, for everyday wear, and its humble cotton sheet beginnings and emo heart are not quite right for special occasions either. But! I love how fantastically twirly it is and that’s good enough for me.

More pictures and the details about my trials making this dress here.

Material Notes

100% cotton king-sized sheet from IKEA, black bias tape, invisible zipper, embroidery thread

I think it’s gorgeous and would be perfect for evening wear … emo heart and all. :)

Great dress, like everything in it: a poem, mullet skirt, heart, your look.

Love the idea of using a sheet and I love your details, like the poem. Beautifully done!

Thank you! Sheets are the best — so much fabric for relatively little money!

Funny how minds think alike. I actually wrote “Desiderata” on a piece of white Dupioni silk and used it as the front panel in a skirt! Love the dress!
