Hot Pink Leather

Added Feb 24, 2014

West Chicago, Il...

Sleeveless, full skirt pleated at waist, back zip dress in hot pink leather is SO MUCH FUN! Lined in acetate, lining has attached petticoat in black dotted tulle, scalloped at the hem. I used my table top machine ( the industrial was unsatisfactory) with a walking foot. Seam allowances are glued open, as well as hem, etc. This is my first leather project and I’m quite happy with it, and the client is a gorgeous woman, so it’s a win-win..

Material Notes

Light weight lamb skin, leather glue, standard zipper, acetate lining, tulle

Spring, Fall, Winter
Garment Type
Evening Wear, Classic
Leather/Fur, Rayon, Tulle

May I ask you if you had to follow the grain line when laying out the pattern pieces on leather?

Hi M! Most leather doesn’t have a grain, so you can lay out the pieces any way you want. How great is that?! It doesn’t fray, it’s easy to cut, ( I used a razor cutter), and you can press it on the wrong side. Go for it!
Emmaonesock.com has some beautiful skins right now, all colors.

Thank you, Kisses! Leather has some great qualities, holding structure is one of them.

You might look into mail order. This leather is from Tandy, they have an extensive catalog.

Thanks. How much leather, # sq ft, does it take to make such a dress?

I think it was 5 skins. I had some leftover. The approximate size/skin is 6 sq ft. Of course, you can calculate square footage needed from the pattern.
