Hot Pink Cocktail frock

Added Jan 6, 2010

I can never find a dress off the rack to flatter my curves so in search of a cocktail dress I turned to my fabric stash and dress patterns for something quick and easy to make. The shocking pink silk fabric needed to be dialed down and I chose a less obvious olive to pair it with in the lining and a simple silhouette to keep it fairly uncomplicated.

I used New Look 6575, but flared the neckline by about 12 inches* to open it up and show the olive colour as a detail. (*edited 11/1/10)

Material Notes

Hot Pink silk taffeta, olive silk lining.

Garment Type
Evening Wear, Other

Ha, thats ok, I know it’s only boys that can measure things with their eyes.

It was kind of a toile in semi-nice fabric that if it turned out good would be wearable, as it is I think I might just sew up the drape in this one (and call the big seam on the Centre Front a “Design Feature”) and start again with a reworked pattern and a good 12" slit.

Thanks for your advice, I shall be sure to credit your cocktail dress once my dress is ready to go onto Burda!

    Cheers Candy

Hi, This dress (and your other creations) is wonderful, so stylish and great colour choices. I wonder if you could give me some advice? I tried to create this same look on a dress but it hasn’t really worked out as well as yours. I put one slit down the centre front of the pattern and just opened it out by about 4 inches but my fold/drape at the front is tiny in comparison to yours. How did you get this look? I’m thinking i need to open the pattern out in the centre front (as i did) but then add another slit opened out by an inch either side. Is that about right?

Thanks for your time in reading my question,

    Cheers, Candy

      Hi Candy,
I’ve just gone to measure it and it’s actually way more dramatic than I’d said (so sorry!). It’s actually 12 inches (or 6 on the fold) as a single pivot at the centre – boy 3 inches was the under statement of the year! Sorry If it messed up any good fabric :-P Love to know how yours turns out ok? xx

Absolutely looove this dress. You’ve hit a home run with this one. I have a similar body shape to yours, so I’m very tempted to make this one. Well done.

Sooooo great… can I check the pattern number with you… I googled and go a baby’s pattern. I know what you mean about buying off the rack – its only a rare find (or a particular designer…. so wish I could afford an entire designer wardrobe – hence I sew!). I’m off to the tennis final on Saturday…. its soooo hot in the dome here, so I have a cute top and am sewing a hot pair of black shorts. Can’t find any that don’t have a butt cheak hanging out in the stores – clients we are taking may not like that. Well done on your project – colours are fantastic – if only I had enough courage to wear that pink!

OMG, that’s an interesting discovery! The pattern number is correct but there is no trace of it on the web (I bought it in the 90’s)! And they have re-used the same number for something else! An alternative might be a McCalls 5972 (dress A), or MCalls 5753.

Good luck with your shorts!!! and have fun at the Hopman!
