Hope Wrap Dress

Added Aug 3, 2009

by erdronen

Cincinnati, Ohio...

Hope is a simple wrap dress pattern for knit fabrics with some stretch. The dress uses binding around the unfinished edges which continues to form the ties. This dress is a quick make with only 3 pattern pieces! Make it your own!

This is my first pattern, so I apologize that it’s not perfect! If you have any questions at all, please message me I’ll be happy to clarify :)

This is also posted on my blog if you’re interested in checking it out!

Material Notes

~2.5 yds knit fabric (I used a soft jersey)

Garment Type
Casual, Evening Wear

Hello there! So, I’ve cut out and put together the pattern, but it seems that the pattern front and back don’t really match. For instance, the arm holes and the shape of the waist don’t jibe. Can anyone help me? Thank you!

it is strange, I also wear in size 34. I printed all of paper(free papar pattern), and put them correctly. But the back side is totally not matched the front. I mean waist size, chest size can not be mached. (the silmest on front is 26.5cm, but the back waist is 15*-x2=30cm, even 30cm, which is still too small for most of pepole. ) I don´t know what´s wrong with it. Who could help me?

Hi! I’m about to cut my jersey fabric and I’m not sure when you said “seam allowances are 5/8”" if the allowances are actually included in the pattern or if I have to add them. I know I checked everywhere if it says that it’s included but I can’t find anything that explicitly says it. Would you please assure me before I cut? Is it included or do I have to add? Thanks! I’m so excited! : )

Can you tell me how wide the fabric is? I understand that it is 2,5yards long but I know that (at least in Austria) there is differences in the width of different fabrics. Thanks!

Maria Jose, to your question. Yes, I add 1 cm on the sides for each size larger that I need. So, I would add 3 cm on each side. I add 3/4 cm at the top of the shoulders for each size larger and I add 1/2 cm. down the sleeve seams and 1/4 cm at the top part of the sleeve that attaches the top of shoulder and underarm for each size larger. I hope this will help.

it depends on what fabric you are using, but if you use a stretch knit then you won’t have to be so precise. you can just make the pieces a little larger.

Just like any other project. Up in the right corner (above the ratings) there’s a button called “Add a project”, click that and follow the instructions. I would love to see it! How interesting!

It’s really not that bad, it was just hard for me to describe! If you just think it through a little before you start, and take your time, it will be fine! You could always turn the edge under instead if you want, or add a facing like many patterns have. Just remember to add a seam allowance to the neckline if you do either of these instead…

I really like this soft gray color, I think it was the color with the dress style that caught my eye. Yes, it is a good idea to use a thicker material for me. I just found your web site, I wil visit again!

Hi, this looks very nice! You’re well proportioned so the wrap dress loves you. A bit of a suggestion…next time choose a pattern with colors. (e.g. that grey dress with some purple or green pattern) It will look awesome, funky and fun on you! Thanks for the pattern!

I agree- I love patterned fabrics and the other versions in prints look beautiful! I also think it would help hide things better. A thicker fabric would help too :) This is one of those really soft, thin, ultra-stretchy jerseys. Fantastic, but reveals everything :)

Thank you for this pattern! It looks so elegant. After reading one of thet other posts.I decided to try it. I wear a 42 in the Burda size, and thought that I would be too large for this style, but I’m going to try it! Being older, I am going to make it longer and bring up the neck line. I have always added or taken away 1 cm for changing sizes, on most of the main seams if this could be of any help to anyone. Thank you again.

thank you for the tip. I am a size 40. So you mean I should add 3 cms on the sides?

It would be absolutely wonderful if someone had the skills and the inclination to scale up this dress – I love it. I printed it out (even though I’m a 40 (sigh . . .)) and am going to compare the changes you made to the original pattern from New Look as see if I can replicate it. I have no pattern drafting/scaling skills what-so-ever. Your dress looks beautiful – you did a fab job with both it and the alterations you made to the pattern. Lovely!

I’ve been coveting you’re lovely, simple, elegant wrap dress since you posted it a couple of weeks back…

… I can just see it in a heavy jersey worn with boots for Fall.

But alas although I am a petite Burda 36-8…you are tiny.

…. So I’m pretty sure I’m not alone in wanting this classic piece in a larger size…I know there are many very skilled Burda Style member out there…and am sure many on this forum would thank heartily anyone who felt like grading your lovely dress for larger sizes.

Oh thank you so much for the vote of confidence! I really do wish I could grade patterns, but I haven’t the slightest clue where to start… Maybe you could just print it and add some width where you need it. It is a very simple pattern, the tricky part though would be the sleeves! BS did post a how-to for a wrap dress- maybe you could start there? Anyway, good luck!
