Holiday dress with A-line skirt

Leicestershire, ...

We like to go somewhere really hot in the Autumn and I’ve been developing my holiday wardrobe so I can get rid of all that RTW polyester that sticks to your skin!

I didn’t want to line this so instead I faced the neckline and added hidden bias binding to the armscyes. However, that last thing I mention, I did again a week later, after it had been sitting in my wardrobe. And why? Well, it was far too tight around the underarms and my boobs were bulging out the sides! I should have took a picture but it wasn’t pretty!

Anyway I thought, no, that will never do and I’ll never wear it, so I got it out again and unpicked the binding, lowered the armscyes and added a new bias binding to give more coverage at the sides. Ahh much better!

I made a toile, believe it or not, but how can you really judge if it’s a completely different fabric? When I pinned in the zip to the actual garment, the top of the back was really gaping, so I adjusted that, and that made the front gape. Hence why there are a couple of pleats in the front neckline.

Oh well, it was all worth it in the end I think, even though at points I was thinking, “Argh! This really should’ve been finished ages ago!!!”

Material Notes

Floral stretch sateen cotton from FABRICLAND, Bournemouth, UK.

This is such a lovely dress, the fabric is fantastic! About the gaping in the back I also have to take in the shoulder and the back by about 1/4in. each to get the perfect fit.

Thank you, Ellen. Yes, it’s a lovely design even though it is five years old and I’ve seen that shape around in RTW this summer! :)

Lovely dress and good on you for persevering. We’ve all done alterations to projects to make them fit . I never make a toile as I think it’s to much work lol. I’m gung ho normally. X

Thanks, Mary. I’m just going to baste stuff now, I think, rather than make a toile. It’ll work if I err on the side of caution, I’m sure! x

Cool fabric and the dress looks great, perfect for your holiday, I made this dress and strangely enough the back gapes, I was lazy left mine gaping and wear it anyway, good job on the alterations fits you perfectly.

Thanks very much, Beccki. Yeah I ALWAYS get that back gape thing! You sew it to your size, fit it as you go around the hips, waist and bust, and then after all that you get a scoop at the back that you could carry a kitten in! :)
