Hillary's Birthday Paradise

Portland, Maine,...

Tomorrow is my birthday, and for an early celebration I am posting this beautiful dress! The photos were taken at Ferry Beach, one of the many beaches less than 5 minutes from where I live on the coast of Maine. I am so fortunate to inhabit such a paradise!

This dress is based on the infamous Butterick 4790, with many modifications. Some of you may GASP when I say that I never made a muslin for this dress (in an effort to be more spontaneous/lazy). I have seen so many women use this pattern, only to contract “Saggyboob-Hunchback Syndrome”. To protect myself from succumbing to this unfortunate malady, I adjusted the angle of the wrap-around front to come up higher. In addition, the underlying front bodice was shortened a couple inches to tighten up the fit. I also filled in the scoop neck back, and I would advise all others to do the same!

I bought this fabric at least a year ago, and tossed it aside for a later date when I would have the patience to adjust the pattern. I don’t have any close-ups of the buttons, but they are vintage finds from a trip with my mother last summer. Perfect!

I hope you are all having a wonderful summer…now get to a beach!

Love your version of this dress. I have the pattern and have hesitated to make it after seeing it made by others and not being fond of the fit. After seeing your version I might take the leap and try it with your tips. Thanks!

OK I think with your advice it will be safe to pull that pattern out, I picked it up for .50 cents at a clearance sale and have been avoiding it ever since. Thank you!

You did an awesome job!!! The hunchback thing had been scaring me off making this pattern, but I may give it a try now!

Sure, but we’ll need visual aids haha…and if all goes as planned, we can do it in person soon!
