Halloween 2013. Christine Daae Gypsy Costume

Added Oct 31, 2013

Kernersville, No...

A friend requested a Halloween costume for her daughter this year who is 6’2". She has never had a costume fit her before. Her favorite look is Christine Daae in Phantom of the Opera. The gypsy look, so this is what I made for her. The skirt is draped, original design. With her being 6’2" pattern length, was not conducive to the fabric width, so I draped a skirt, cutting sections of fabric on the bias and sewing them together diagonally. The chemise is modified from Historical Simplicity #9769 Removed the short sleeve, and lengthened to floor adding a ruffle and antique laces. The corset is a modification of Simplicity 5006, I opened it in the front and added a busk, rather than a closed front, I also constructed it differently by adding steel boning over the bust and making it a five layered construction for durability and leaving it some flex, so she can breath! Built it with a muslin core rather than coutil. The lace hip scarf and crossbody bag are original pieces. I will add more photos later. The skirt is not pictured in full, but I have included a nice shot of the Chemise with just the finished corset over it.

Material Notes

Cotton Muslin, Antique lace and buttons. Used vintage embroidery thread for the button “frogs” The skirt and corset are cottons and blends.

Very nice. What did you line the corset with? I have been using purse liner weight interfacing (the uber stuff) and its my favorite for keeping a structure, so I’m curious about your materials…

Hmm, I am on a be-lazy-and-follow-path-of-least-resistance kick right now. So strictly no corseting for me! :-)

LOL…that is usually me. Been doing short cut corsets for so long, wanted to see if I could do real ones

And you did, and you did it beautifully!
(finger slip, I marked your comment as inappropriate, didn’t mean to…. Don’t know how to undo it! Doh! Having a Homer Simpson moment here…)

She also chose the larger grommets rather than traditional smaller grommets! She thought it gave it a slight steampunk type look…I liked her choice!
