Green CDD Please help altering the back

Just checking my altered pattern was alright. Not a bad fit but I need help altering the back of the dress for next time. I added darts to take off 2cm each and the I realised I’d not altered the facing properly and it was 1cm too narrow so I just cut the back to match as I knew it was still going to gape a bit. I don’t like the darts I’ve been through my old pattern books and the centre back seam is always straight, thought the darts would get me round this but it still doesn’t look right. Zip is lower down as it’s only a 16 inch one but the hook and eye look good and I’d found some lovely buttons but don’t want to draw attention to the back.

Material Notes

Some failry stiff green material a friend gave me. I really should have washed it first cos I’ll be really stuck if it shrinks in the wash! It creases a bit but it’s comfortable to wear :-)

    Hi Laura!

I agree with all of Anne’s pointers. The skirt portion of the dress looks fine!

ok, a few pointers. *This dress is suposed to sit in the waist, but it appears to be sitting too low on you. Shorten the bodice to allow the joining seam to be in the right place. *Front darts, they should not extend past the bust point. Yours are too high, re-sew them to finish approx 1" below the natural bust point. *Back bodice darts are too high. They should finish below the shoulder blades, draw a line at right angles to the centre back to line up with the bottom of the armhole curve. This is where the dart point should come to on the back. For a gappy neckline, use a paper dart in the pattern. How much do you need to take out?

I need to take out a triangle that is 12 cm long and 3cm wide. I don’t suppose it matters if the CB isn’t a straight line? I did think the darts were very high but didn’t think about them until I’d sewd the boddice. Will alter them and the very long back darts. Brilliant help, thank you. I’ve not done proper sewing since my GCSE’s which was a very long time ago. I’m usually ok with alterations but it just stumped me after I’d altered the pattern so much for my height lol
It’s such a lovely dress and I spent hours yesterday reading her blog, Elaine’s fantastic.
Thank you for your help, it’s very much appreciated x
