Gathered cap sleeve dress

This is the No.3 Gather Drape Dress from the Japanese pattern book “Drape Drape.” I had completed a few patterns from this book and found them relatively easy. This one, unfortunately, was the exception.

The whole dress is made from one pattern piece, which seemed amazing…until I realized the zip had to go into the bias cut at the back.

I re-sewed and unpicked the zip a million times, tried consulting my mum, tried looking for answers online – all to no avail! Every attempt ended up with a wavy hump back camel look! Just when I was on the verge of calling it quits, I decided that desperate times call for desperate measures. I grabbed the scissors and slashed a deep V into the back. This got rid of the hump back and also allowed a bit more arm/back movement (which was getting very tight). I also found that the pattern’s neckline came up too high at the back, so this alteration seemed to solve a lot of my problems at once.

I’m happy with how the end result looks, but unfortunately, I’m not sure I’ll get much wear out of it. It’s a little uncomfortable. If I were to make this again, I would use a stretch knit to allow more movement and would allow me to do away with the zip. I’d also add a bit more length.

Material Notes

Shirting fabric with fine grey and white stripe.

I’m no expert so I’m not sure, but the dress is made with only one piece so there’s no seam down the side. Side zip could be a bit tricky. Have fun with the book. I LOVE it!

Looks great! I’m sure the 3rd Pattern Magic is for knit fabrics so maybe this is why you feel uncomfortable in it.

It looks great, and I actually like the way your back turned out better than the original version (that has the tiniest neck opening). I made one of these, in jersey but a way too small size, I need to make another one. It’s so pretty.

I like the result, though I think it might be uncomfortable because the pattern was drafted for knits. Trying to insert a zipper in a bias-cut fabric, I’d interface the zippered opening.

I’m not 100% sure, but I think the pattern calls for wool, not knit (a bit surprisingly so). Knit seems much more suitable…
