Final Part: 1953 Travel Set

Added Jul 8, 2010

Vienna, Austria

The last two pieces of the 10-piece travel set are done! I hope you are not getting tired of my excitement – it isn’t that I can’t find plenty of “faults” in my execution, but I find the patterns themselves so cool that I can look right over those…
A funny thing about this “finale”: I always called it the “ten piece travel set”, while the magazine actually says: “I’m leaving for 10 days”…
I was always looking forward to making that cute romper as the last piece, only to find out when I got to it: they make it in two parts: shorts and top! That would have made it an 11-piece set! I decided to make it a one-piece, because I had already gotten so used to the thought of it – and I don’t regret it. I find it even cooler to spend a day at the beach or so in this romper (made of cotton, unlined, so you stay nicely cool), and then just pulling the skirt over it, maybe add some pearls and voil, you can go have a drink at a nice cocktail bar! Oh yes, I have this vacation all planned out!
If you want to be even more elegant, you pull out the corsage jacket, made of a beautiful blue silk… they suggest wearing this for a walk in the park.
I put the pictures all together for an overview, and also added some more combinations for you to see how well it all goes together. I can’t believe I managed to find all these fabrics! Maybe that was the hardest part…
These pieces can all be worn with modern clothes too, the tops look great with jeans, the blazer too, and the skirts with regular modern t-shirts or blouses…

Material Notes

Camisole jacket: silk, lining
Romper: Cotton, bias binding tape

Garment Type
Cotton, Silk

That romper is just….so….cool! Love the white trim and button at the neck! And I also love how you used a white zipper that is visible. Such a small detail but so fifties.

Thank you thank you! Yes, those last two pieces are certainly the whipped cream on the cake! I am a bit sad it’s over too, while at the same time also very satisfied for having finished it and gone through with the whole lot. Making single pieces will feel a bit bland now…

Oooooh, I wish I could help you! Believe it or not, I would be crazy enough to make another one… I have looked through all my vintage magazines, but none other have this kind of set in it… we’ll just have to put together one on our own!

I’m in awe of your dedication, execution and attention to detail with this project. This is like a high end Soap Opera. I love the colours, the finishing and the photograpy is amazing also. Well done! Will there be a next episode? I hope so! Bravo!

Oooooh, thank you!!! Somehow, “high end Soap Opera” hits it perfectly! I feel like it when I wear it, too!! You know, I actually always think I should take better pictures, but it would take so much time… time I’d so much rather use for sewing… Goodness, I want a next episode too, heck, I want a whole new season! We shall see…

I can’t express how absolutely fabulous these things are! Wow wow wow! Va va va voom!

I will have to check out your other pieces. I usually am not a huge fan of romper suits – however, yours has won my heart (love the lenght of the shorts) – great work – you should be thrilled and I hope you enjoy that cocktail – you earned it and deserve it!

Thank you!!! Yes, I do love it, now I have to get my courage together to actually wear it :-) You know, at first I wasn’t even sure I would sew that romper (4 months ago when I started…), but it grew on me, too, and they have become so fashionable this season! And I tell you, it is extremely comfortable and will be a favorite of mine this summer for sure!

Thank you! Don’t be scared, I think it is well worth trying! Depending on the sizing you might want to make muslins – if you are not into that, I strongly advise itl It is done fast, you don’t need to hem anything, I even drew the pattern right onto the fabric. You can sew it up in no time and then you are sure the “real thing” will be worth your time and effort… I say: Go for it!
