Bikini Top & Tennis Pants; Triangle Bikini Top & Pants – Kombi Knits by Beverley Sharp #309A 1979

I’m not much of a bikini person, but its safe to say I’ve become obsessed with them lol. I came across this book of swimsuit patterns in a thrift store, and these two string bikini sets were quick makes. Neither of the tops are lined but they may need to be, as both these cross-wise stretch prints are a little sheer. I had exactly enough of both fabric scraps in my vintage 70s remnants stash to complete the bikinis. I got the idea from a web search to add some fringing to the triangle bikini. I slashed a rectangular piece and stitched it to the top of each triangle. The low riding backside of the purple pants is composed of two pieced together halves with a joining center seam, which meets up with the crotch seam, for a perfect fit around the bum. I put casing for spaghetti straps also in the sides of the pants and they can be tied up. The plaid bikini/tennis pants have strange crotch detail at the front, but these bloomers sure are cozy. Both bikini tops can slide either horizontally or vertically along the straps. Location: Pt Chevalier.

Material Notes

early-70s light-weight printed knit fabrics both with slight crosswise stretch only (both possibly stretch tricot), elastic underwear lace.

Both swimsuits look great, you’ve inspired me to maybe sew a bikini this summer, though I’m not much of a bikini person either.

I tested both these bikini’s down at the beach today and I was happy as both stayed in place lol. Because they are both adjustable string bikini’s the straps could be easily tightened to the correct tension. The firm, stable 70s knit fabrics with minimal crosswise stretch, no doubt contributed to a secure feeling when wearing both bikini’s, as they felt tight enough to stay put and contour to the body. The fringe bikini, while lightweight, stayed damp for longer than the plaid bikini. The plaid one dried faster than expected, although it was a little more sheer. I felt alright in both these outfits despite my shyness, so I must like the design, composition, and style of the patterns.

Update: I just put the fringe bikini through the wash; but the fringe came out tatty. yikes, lol. So therefore I’d recommend the use of a decent weight stretch jersey which holds its own, maybe such as lycra.
