Castles in Spain Dress

I found this awesome printed cotton in grandma’s stash. It seems to be quite old. I knew for a while I wanted to make a very simple shift dress out of it, but I had to find the pattern with just the right darts. When I saw all the great big prints this season started looking and found a great vintage pattern. The darts are just right so they don’t interrupt the print.

The image of the castle went vertically along the width of the fabric, which was not too wide, so it’s a little shorter than I probably would have made it otherwise. It worked out amazingly well though, I think the different elements of the pattern hit the body in just the right places. I lucked out because this placement was really my only option. The hem is literally just the selvage folded over to give me more length and also because it showed the copyright info of the fabric, which I thought was cool.

I fully lined it with a lightweight white lining. The belt is also grandma’s, from the early 50’s. We have almost the same initials.
