An upcoming 10th wedding anniversary gave me the perfect excuse to add a faux fur jacket to my handmade wardrobe and Burda 01/2016 #120 Faux Fur Jacket was the perfect pattern. I’ve made this jacket twice before, but not out of faux fur. Burda’s image from the magazine (& website!) haunted my mind and I knew I wanted one in faux fur too. Using Burda’s photo for inspiration, I thought this faux rabbit fur fabric matched it well. Mine is lined with the softest black velour fleece. So warm and cozy….. find I am wearing it constantly, not only on our anniversary trip, but throughout this entire winter season. I love it!!

Major fail :( I lined my faux rabbit jacket with a black polyester woven lining that was too stiff for the faux fabric. Not good. My jacket pulled and tugged terribly in all the wrong places, as well as being too warm for the type of jacket it is. I ripped out the lining and am looking for a black fabric that would be more suitable for a lining. I’m thinking a moderate-weight sort-of shiny knit.

Oh dear! I am so sorry you experienced a fail with your jacket!! For my lining, I used a velour fleece from my local WalMart and it is the most luxurious thing I’ve ever seen/worn! Great drape for this jacket. But I was wanting a warmer jacket than it sounds like you are wanting. I will say, this is my third jacket from this pattern, and my other two (you can see them in my studio pics) were from materials similar maybe to what you’ve been describing and the fit is completely different with those other two. (Recently I cut off the diagonal front on the coral georgette version and re-cut it to a straight traditional ‘boxy’ style and love it so much more.) The fur is actually my favorite by far, with the way it swings and moves. I just cannot wear it unless it is cold! A knit lining might actually be a great idea! Good Luck!!! Let me know how it goes!! :)

Lisa, when I made the darts in the front, I folded them downward, as is standard. But that created a weird black line due to, I believe, the nature of the faux rabbit fabric. So I folded them upward when I sewed the side seams. How did you handle the darts on your jacket? I don’t see that weird black line in your beautiful version. Faux fur sewing can be tricky :/

Hi Debora, I apologize for the delay in replying, I haven’t been in my account here for a while. Yes, I pressed them downward. There is a little bit of a ‘line’ but it doesn’t grab my attention and when the jacket is on and ‘fluid’, nothing shows glaringly to me.

OMG! I am making the same jacket in what looks like the exact same fabric. I got my fabric, gray faux rabbit, at JoAnn Fabrics in Poway, CA. I am lining it with black polyester charmeuse. It seems great minds think alike :) Your jacket looks gorgeous.

We must have the same fabric as I got mine at my local JoAnn’s! Yours will be fantastic with the lining you’ve chosen. Look forward to seeing yours!! Thank you so much! :)

I love faux fur because it looks good and humane for the animals. You did a good fur jacket. The jacket looks stylish and fits you. I myself recently sewed faux fur hat. This is my first job with faux fur. This hat has become my favorite in the winter wardrobe. Good luck with new projects :)
