Boxers for my Bro

This was one of those projects where I started to have doubts about half way through.

I used the user contributed “Michael” boxer pattern, slightly modified to use two prints in an alternating pattern.

The pattern instructions are pretty minimal and don’t include information on how much fabric to buy, or what width of elastic to use. I estimated half a yard per pair and bought 6 1/2 yards of different coordinating print, planning to get six pairs in total. This guess turned out to be a little low. I got four pairs just fine, and because I was mixing fabrics anyway, I was able to squeeze out another two by piecing together scraps. For anyone else who might be using this pattern, I recommend about 3/4 yard per pair.

I made the first pair with a closed fly per the pattern instructions, but decided to do the rest with a functioning button fly. It was this point that I started to wonder about the appropriateness of making boxers from my little brother in the first place. Is this a gift he’ll appreciate…or is that a little weird?

Either way, I decided to at least finish the project. I had completed everything but the button holes when my Mom came over to my place for a visit and saw them sitting out on my desk, next to the sewing machine.

“They’re cute,” she said, “but don’t you think they’re a little short?”

A discussion ensued wherein my mother and I debated whether or not said boxer shorts were big enough for my little brother’s junk. I swear, you just can’t make this stuff up. The final verdict was yes, they are big enough, if the waist is large enough for them to be worn low on the hips.

All that said, if I used this pattern again, I would probably add an inch or so of length in the legs, just to be safe.

haha that is quite an awkward situation indeed but nevertheless they turned out great and i think it’s a good gift because you know he’ll actually use them!
