Blue (almost black) shirtdress

The color of this dress is actually a very dark blue, it took me several days to find out if it was black or blue! I used pattern 109 from Burdastyle 1/2010, but made several changes: 3/4length widened sleeves, left out the pintucks, and made the skirt fuller and with more pleats in the back. And I made a handpicked, centered back zipper (I find that back zippers are much more comfortable than zippers at the side). For the zipper, I followed Susan Khalje’s instructions of her Craftsy online class, and I have to say that for me this is so far the nicest (and easiest zipper) I ever put in a garment!
I find that the dress, although very comfortable, looks a bit plain on me, so I tried to spice it up with some coloured tights. If you have another idea, please write a comment, I’m thankful for any hints!

Material Notes

A very dark blue wool poly blend

Thank you so much! I already bought a pair of tights in a lighter purple (my favorite color), and I will see where to get some nice other accessories… :)

I think it’s very nice dress and I was going to propose the same thing that everybody else: a contrasting belt could give it more fun. The tights are a great idea. And what about a brooch? Or you could change the buttons and replace them with colourfull ones. And that’s the thing I love about your dress: it’s beautiful in it’s simplicity so you can wear it alone or accesorize easily. Bravo!

I think it’s a very nice dress but I agree with the others that things like brightly coloured tights, maybe a belt or a scarf or a necklace could go a long way to spicing it up a bit. Also, personally, I tend to wear shirt dresses with the top 1 or 2 button left open which makes the look less strict.

Thank you for commenting! I should try it with a button more open; although somehow I have the impression that like with an open shirt the proportions are less flattering on me – the reason why I never wear classic shirts; should have thought about it before making a shirtdress!
      BTW, I love your blog!

Looks great! I agree with Jodi, a contrasting belt would jazz it up but it does look good just the way you’re wearing it :)

This is a great dress that could be used as a backdrop for so many fun accessories, colored/patterned tights, statement shoes, colored belts, a bright scarf, statement necklaces (hannahmakesthings has really quirky ones), or a vintage hat. The way the neckline is set up without a lot of fuss will really let you do a lot with accessories. I’m feeling that I’m going to have to make myself a dress like this one.

I have a dress which looks very similar to this and have the same problem – so I usually wear a belt with it, it adds a little colour.
