Bernina 3 Series entry - tailormade party dress

Added Nov 24, 2010

by laurenmendoza

San Francisco, C...

The full pattern for this dress is available in my Etsy store!

The inspiration for my party dress are the “tailormades” and cycling outfits for women of the 1890s, in the Victorian era. In this era, women were dressing more practically than before, and wearing outfits that imitated men’s suits of the time. They were becoming more independent: riding bicycles and working in offices, and they wanted to be taken seriously as equal citizens. Military and authoritative, serious styles were popular.

I designed and did the pattern for my dress. In my dress, I incorporated the black bias trim that is seen on many dresses from my inspiration board. Instead of big leg-of-mutton sleeves I shrunk them into little puff sleeves. The skirt is made from 4 identical pattern pieces overlapped on each other.

Material Notes

The fabric is satin, with black chiffon bias trim and cord.

This is so lovely and i’m and definitely going to adapt the skirt pattern over the summer! Love the binding, it really stands out! Was just wondering wether you put a zip down one of the side seams and how easy it was to do that with the skirt part of the garment?

Great dress and great pattern! Am wondering if you would have any advice how to lengthen the skirt? The petals are tapered so I don’t quite know where to add the length?

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated! thanks again! and great job!

I downloaded the pattern & noticed it doesn’t have a test square. I’d love to make this but when i printed it out, the pattern piece was enormous. i used “fit to printable area,” should i not next time?

instead of “fit to printable area” you should chek “none” so no scaling involved

Is there any chance you’ll put up the top half of the dress? I love it, and think it’d be perfect for a wedding I’m attending in four months time!

Hi, great pattern but where are the instructions? I checked the “Get instructions” “Print-at-home” and “Copyshop” pages, but no luck. Cordially, Nehmah

Wow, what a great design! Bias trim from chiffon?! I would have assumed that was too slippery to even try~!

How come I can’t print at home, is there a way to re-size it? I tried & can’t figure it out. I really want to make this. Thanks! :-)
