Balenciaga on my mind

Added Jun 23, 2013

Somewhere, Ireland

I’m enchanted by the works of Cristobal Balenciaga in the late 40s, by the slim and elegant models posing for the shots in simple but beautifully tailored garments. My project is a far cry from that but was greatly inspired by the photos included in black and white.

For the high-waist pencil skirt I used the following pattern:
Pencil Skirt 07/2012 #120

I just name it the “perfect pencil skirt ever” :)
It gives me the most amazing figure and sits on my body like it was my second skin. I can only recommend it for women who have pear shaped lower-body. I have a little tummy but a very round butt, this pattern suits me perfect. I used size 36 with 1.5cm seam-allowance.

The jacket is a mix-match of old patterns, but I drafted the flared lower part myself. I, unfortunately had only a limited amount of this gorgeous rich brocade left so I couldn’t quite get the pleats right but I does not bother me at all.

What bothers me is my pictures…I haven’t got the skills to take decent images, sorry about that :)

The jacket is fully lined.

Ps.: I have some fabric left but very little, I’m thinking of making a cropped bustier with the pencil skirt…should I?

This outfit looks amazing! Beautiful proportions, gorgeous fabric, very luxurious! Love that you kept the simmetry of the fabric. I think you’ve created a timeless outfit :) Congratulations Trudy xx

I just discovered that I have misplaced on pleat at the front of the jacket, but I have fixed it now. I only wish I had somewhere to wear it though :) Thank you so much Cristina you always make my day!! :*

I actually love the exposed zipper. If you’d used a plastic zip, it might have looked a little bit cheap, but the metal adds something more tough and modern than an invisible zip would, and it compliments the gold clasp on the jacket really nicely. Great silhouette too, super dramatic.

And yes, yes, yes to making a cropped bustier!!

I don’t know hot to insert invisible zip to begin with, I have terrible trouble with zips :D
I wanted an exposed zip, the only thing I don’t like about that it is black. I love the contrast of gold as well, I’m relieved that you spotted that too :)
Thank you for your nice comment, will do the bustier to complete the outfit :)

this fabric is still over the top :-) that’s why I like it. But why didn’t you use an unvisible zipper?? would be much more elegant. Nevertheless, great style!

I might change the zip, to be honest I just grabbed one I had at home. My fabric supplier is an hour drive and I didn’t feel like driving down for a zipper. Thanks anyway
