Arwen - my degree project

Jakobstad, Finland

This was my degree project. I was inspired by Arwen from “The Lord of the Ring”-trilogy. The dress also has Greek influences. It’s my own design and pattern and I also sewed the dress. It’s an ankle-lenght dress made in several layers and three different materials. I spent a long time on constructing the pattern and making a well-fitting toile. The hardest part was the sewing. Silk chiffon is a very thin fabric and it is incredible hard to handle. And I had never sewed in chiffon before. So, this dress was not so easy to sew. I can easily say that it required blood, sweat and many tears. But I’m quite satisfied with the result. It’s far away from perfect. But I like the design and I love the colour and the fabrics.

Material Notes

For the utmost(?) layers I used silk chiffon and for the second layer I used crépe satin silk. As lining I used a blend fabric, triacetate-polyester, which was antistatic. I used two different threads. Gütermann’s 100% silk thread and polyester thread. Plastic leaves as decoration.

Garment Type
Chiffon, Blends, Satin, Silk

This is just lovely and you did a great job working with a difficult fabric. Polyester chiffon is bad enough so I can imagine that silk chiffon must be much more slippery. I hope you get a great mark. Well done :)

Gorgeous! I love the color, fabric and design! It may have fantasy as inspiration but it fits into the real world with beautiful elegance. Well done!

Thank you. I always feel so miserable when I cries over unsuccesful sewing projects. I have established that the less problematic a garment is to sew, the more likely it is that I’m going to wear it (I’m not sure if I wrote the correct English…).
