Angela Kane - Looking Back

Looking at all the wonderful projects on BurdaStyle has made me nostalgic for the garments I have made over the years.

This is the only design that I have kept from my knitwear collection in the 70’s. I had been studying fashion and pattern cutting at Croydon College of Art but had been working on machine knitting for quite a few years before that. I was supplying knits to some exclusive London boutiques, the legendary Lucienne Phillips being one.

I was inspired by the wonderful colour range of this pure linen yarn that I imported from Sweden. It produced a heavenly sheer, knit fabric. I finished all edges by hand with crochet. I will be adding this as a technique soon. It is a great way to finish knitting.

The skirt is knitted in panels and is attached to the bodice with an elasticated waistband. The big triangular shawl can be draped at the waist for a different look. I think this style, the one shoulder dress, is very contemporary.

Are there any machine knitters on BurdaStyle? I would quite like to design for knitters again.

Material Notes

Linen Yarn from Sweden. I still have this yarn in all sorts of glorious colours and hope to get back to some machine knits in the summer.

I took a class on machine knitting, but it was rather short and I didn’t get the hang of it. If I had more studio space I would definitely like to have a machine.

It’s great to hear from machine knitters. Although I like hand knitting I need to work quickly to get results.

I shall give some thought to patterns if the interest is there.

In the meantime get some oil on those machines – they don’t like being left unused!
