Alison's Bridesmaids Dress

Added Aug 28, 2011

New York, New Yo...

Alison, our Creative Director, is getting married in September— and in BurdaStyle fashion, she’s created the attire for her bridal party: including seven different bridesmaids dresses and her wedding gown. She designed six of the bridesmaids dresses herself, and for the seventh, experimented with burda style magazine’s bubble dress pattern, which is available for download. All of the bridesmaids dresses were made from various types of peach colored silk.

Alison’s Notes: I find that this shape works well for many different body types, and the folds of fabric make an elegant statement. The instructions for this dress tend to be quite tricky, so I made some changes to the construction of the dress— see here for my notes on making the sewing process a bit more simple.

Material Notes

Stretch charmeuse for lining, silk crepe de chine self

Garment Type
Bridal, Evening Wear

I would’ve thought that a bubble dress would be unflattering on a fuller figure (like my own, for example), but with the sash at the waist and the soft folds of the dress, it actually helps accentuate the curves – in a good way! This version in silk turned out very pretty =) I think I’ll have to make one for myself now… hehe

I think it’s lovely! Gives the model some great shape, without making her look larger than she is. Love the color too.

Great work! Congratulations!!! Ignore some of those other comments, we all have different taste or else the creative world would be pretty boring!

It’s entirely possible this dress could be worn inside out with the stretch charmeuse, whichi is underutilized in the sewing world. Wow. I’m amazed that Alison’s sewing all these dresses…wedding prep sans sewing is stressful enough. Right now, stretch charmeuse is on sale at Vogue Fabrics: http://www.voguefabricsstore.com/product.php?productid=12800&partner=vogue12

I like it on the model, but that´s because she´s so thin; she would look good in anything… I would definitelly look like a big shapeless sack in this dress. But I like the color and fabric.

I agree with hcbouma, I don’t like that dress at all. In this color it looks more like a nightgown and not like a bridesmaid dress. I think it would look better with a colored detail and less voluminous.

I’ve been asked to make some bridesmaid outfits and one of the dresses has some similarity to this pattern. Good to see the finished item in this fabric, it’s given me a better idea of what I want to do….. And of course, Congratulations to Alison, on both the upcoming marriage and completing the mammoth task of making all the dresses!
