A Cape for NYC

Ellensburg, Wash...

For many years, I’ve wanted a cape. It’s not the most usual piece of outerwear, but I think it can be excellent when done well. For Christmas this past year, my mother (who is a better seamstress than me by far!) offered to make me a cape, but didn’t know what I wanted. So together, we created the cape you see here. I had found the pattern on Burdastyle in the past and knew that it was closest to the Pendelton one I wanted, but could not afford! and so we chose to use the Burdastyle pattern Cape #101A. We searched all over the internet (again, would have loved Pendleton wool, but too pricey for me at this point in life), but eventually I found the fabric in a small local fabric shop that had essentially two options. Some solid wool and this excellent print I eventually chose. The cape is not lined, except for the hood, and I asked my mom to finish all the seams with binding.

I love almost everything about this cape, except for the hood. The burdastyle photo uses a material with much more drape, so the hood issues are not easily seen. If you want to make this hood with a fabric with any sort of body, I recommend drafting your own and do not use their hood. It is not only confusing to put together, but looks pretty ugly in my opinion when finished. We did make a mock up and I tried/thought I fixed it, but the finished product is still not my favorite. Maybe you can try this hood? I will probably not ever put the hood up, but I do like the way the cape looks with a hood down the back. Overall all, a lovely cape that I’m quite excited to use!

The name of this cape comes from the fact that my mom worked quickly to get it done in time for me to take on my trip to NYC over New Years! More / larger pictures on my blog :)
