One Piece Swimsuit with Opera Top – Kombi Knits by Beverley Sharp #309C 1979

This is a variation on the previous scoop back swimsuit I made by the same pattern company except it has an angled back, halter neck ties, and accented/bound edges. This version has the same princess seam lines, which I decided to emphasize with contrast paneling, and of course I found both fabrics in the sewing store remnants bin lol. It is very comfortable to wear and it has ample coverage. Bound elastic edging is placed around the entire neck and back opening, and the bias edging is doubled over to also make the straps. Both knit fabrics might be a little on the stretchier end of the scale, so the halter straps are way up around my neck lol, but I still feel at home in this swimsuit. Location: Milford Beach.

Material Notes

lightweight animal print jersey (4-way stretch), and black cotton knit ribbing (4-way stretch), underwear elastic

Garment Type
Beach, Vintage

I just tested this swimsuit at the beach, and to my surprise it was a fail lol, in terms of holding up to the water. The fabric was the wrong one to use, as the ribbing ballooned out. The bust and leg holes stretched way out, loosely flailing about when I was just wading in the water. Finally I realize proper swimsuit fabric is necessary for swimwear. It looked good dry, but the fabric was too stretchy for getting wet. It also took a while to dry, and only if it was sunny, as it had a soaked feeling to it. Lol
