5 Yr Old's First Project

Long Beach, Cali...

A few months ago my 5 year old daughter got out some of my scrap fabric and my spare scissors and started cutting pieces out while I ironed nearby. A little while later she came and told me her fabric was stuck in the sewing machine. After digging the fabric and knotted thread out of the machine I asked if I could help.

She placed all the pieces and I helped pin and sew straight lines. Once she got a roughly triangular piece put together with a waistband on the bottom I suggested adding straps to the top and this is what we ended up with. It ties around her waist and neck then the neck ties loop through where the back is sewn together to make a racer-back. I was pretty impressed with my little girl’s first project. What do you think?

Material Notes

lycra knit, woven cotton print

I know. In a few years I’ll be asking her to make MY clothes instead of the other way around.

It is adorable! I think you have a fashonista on your hands!!! Keep encouraging her and she will be creating some really cool projects in the future, can’t wait to see her next project!!! My grandson, who is also 5 wants me to teach him to sew as does my 3 year old granddaughter. I am having fun showing them all about sewing and embroidery.
