Step 8 Outer and inner skirts

Neaten upper edges of outer and inner skirts with closely spaced zigzag stitching. Stitch centre back seam of skirt, leaving seam open from upper edge down, 25 cm (10 ins) long on outer skirt and 18 cm (7 ins) long on inner skirt. Press seam allowances open and press allow-ances on edges of inside slit to inside. Machine baste outer and inner skirts 5 mm (3/16 in) and 1 cm (3/8 in) from upper edge. Gather outer skirt to fit edge of dress bodice and gather inner skirt to 2 cm (3/4 in) less than edge of bodice. Pin upper edge of inner skirt to attached petersham ribbon, 5 mm (3/16 in) from edge of bodice, with right fabric side facing down. Back slit edges of inner skirt should lie 1 cm (3/8 in) from marked back edges of bodice. Stitch inner skirt panel to petersham ribbon, along gathering lines. Pin upper edge of outer skirt to petersham ribbon, over inner skirt with wrong fabric side facing down. Marked back slit edges of bodice and outer skirt meet. Also stitch outer skirt along lines of gathering.
