1943 Beaded Cocktail Kimono Wrap Dress

Pascagoula, Miss...

I made this 1943 WWII Cocktail Dress from the EvaDress D40-3863 pattern, for the Eva Dress 1940’s Pattern Challenge Spring 2016 Contest! It’s the second vintage 1940’s dress I have made for myself and I am in love with the way it fits.
I had so much fun glamming up retro-style and taking the photos in it! I felt like I could have stepped into the “Captain America” movie and asked Sergeant Bucky Barnes to dance. ;)
My neighbor’s kitty cats got in on the action and struck a few poses with me as well.

I bought the salmon iridescent silky fabric at my favorite discount fabric store for $2.99 a yard. I fitted the pattern to myself and began sewing up the dress. I wanted to hone some couture sewing techniques that I don’t get to use as often as I like — I pinked all the curved seams on the inside, French-seamed the center back skirt seam and shoulder seams. I hand-stitched down all the facings (neck, sleeves, skirt) and hand-stitched the hemline as well. I added snaps on the interior cross-over piece to keep it in place. I also handmade shoulder pads and tacked them down to the inside shoulder seam.

I hand-stitched the beaded gunmetal glass bead appliques around the right shoulder and down the center bust. I also hand-stitched gunmetal seed beads around each of the sleeve edges.

I made button loops and set them in to the side-bodice facing, and added two gunmetal silver metal buttons. The side tie sits just beneath them and is tied in a decorative bow.

One of my favorite features of this pattern was the “V” waist yoke on the back of the dress. It turned out looking pretty impressive with the topstitching!

Gorgeous! I am impressed and inspired by all the details, hand stitching and beading you put into this. The styling is great too (including the cat whose colour fits so well with your dress).
