Hi Lily! Thank for your lovely comments on my recent projects. I haven’t heard from you in ages. Are you still sewing? :) :) :) I hope so. Hope you are well, Stephanie

Rach! Here is the link to the sewing club fabric store happening http://burdastyleclubs.ning.com/events/bsc-perth-invasion-of-potters Mel sent it round. It’s 19 feb (I thought 12 feb somehow), so I will be able to make it! This fabric store is superclose to our places, so we should check it out! Other than that, I am looking forward to the fabulous dress you’ve made! xox

‘I want my Burdastyle coat back! It’s fabulous and I’m cold!….’ What do you mean, you are cold??? I just packed my winter coat away and am only bringing a flimsy summer coat to Perth…I thought it was supposed to be hot over there… Does this mean I have to go shopping for another coat?…geesh, life is tough sometimes!

hahaha it’s OK now… although definitely not HOT yet. It does actually get quite cold in Perth in winter and there is no central heating anywhere so you probably need a vaguely warm coat… I suppose you could buy one here, but they are expensive. Or you could just make a new one!

Not long til you arrive! How exciting!

Hahaha, so I really thought your first name was Lily! Stuuuupid! I’m not so up to date with my English literature, haha! Anyhoo, yes, our flight is scheduled on the 15th of September, as long as our visa comes in in time, aarrghh, so much hassle with needing police clearance and nomination etc etc. We are going to stay at a friend’s place, who lives on the border of Subiaco & West Leederville for the first while until we find a place of our own. My work will be at UWA in Crawley, so we are looking for a place around there, preferably Subiaco, but I don’t know whether this is doable. Where do you live? And can you recommend nice areas not so far from UWA? Of course, if you know of any nice house that will become available please let me know! I think we can pay up to around $400 a week. It doesn’t need to be furnished, as we are shipping quite some crap over to WA. It is really sweet of you to offer your help, thanks so much! I am quite sure I will contact you at some point for help, and any way to give you the gingham fabric (providing the ship with our container hasn’t sunk or been attacked by pirates…) See you soon! :)

No worries! Not all that many people are familiar with The House of Mirth! I live in Leederville which I totally recommend. It’s young and trendy and has heaps of great shops/bars/restaurants/cafes and isn’t as expensive as Subiaco. I’m assuming you will have a bike (you are Dutch, after all!) and I used to ride my bike to UWA and it took me 25 mins from Leederville and I’m unfit/obese/have the world’s worst bike, so it would probably take you 15 mins. Lots of people at UWA live in Nedlands, Claremont or Shenton Park which are close by and the houses are gorgeous. Although they are all a bit boring and expensive and full of rich old people. Subiaco is also good, but it’s pretty unlikely you’d find something there for $400/week. West Leederville and Wembley are also good options, as is Northbridge and Mt Lawley (although they are a little further away but still in riding distance). My other super-tall Dutch friend has just moved to Northbridge and she loves it. And we should meet up for lunch or something when you arrive! Looking forward to it. :) And I’ll tell you if I know of any good houses available.

Ah that sounds great! Yes, I think I would prefer to live in (West-)Leederville, Subiaco or Mt Lawley. At least I really liked these areas when I was in Perth for 4 months in 2007. I remember this very cool bookstore in Mt Lawley where I used to go quite a lot (attached to a video store). From Northbridge I remember there were a lot of shady night clubs and short skirts and glitter….
We should definitely meet up, that would be great! I’ll e-mail you when I get there! :) Would be cool if you could tell me where the nice fabric stores, bars and cafes are…
And yes, I will also get a bike, I am indeed dutch (&tall!), so can’t live without a bike…:)
      See you soon!

Ahhhh you’ve been to Perth. Yes, Planet Video/Planet Books is very cool indeed. Hahaha yes there are many dodgy nightclubs and inappropriate clothes in Northbridge, but there are also a lot of really cute old terrace houses and heaps of really nice indie bars and clothes shops as well. Unfortunately there aren’t any nice fabric stores in Perth, but I’ll definitely tell you where the bad ones are!!

Hiya, I NEEED your help!!! I have just been asked to do 2 flower girl dresses (what have I done…. oh so stressful sewing for others) and they want a simple dress (thank god) with a bow on the front (help!) So since you are the Queen of Bows I was wondering if there was any tips and tricks you could share with me – from the brief conversation I have had with the bride I assume it will be a ribbon bow – but ribbon and I just don’t work well together. So maybe I could convince them that a fabric bow might be the way to go. I would really appreciate any assistance you could give me here – grab me by email ac_braden@yahoo.com.au Thanks, Cherie (GDAC)

OoOoo that would be amazing if you could bring me some!! It took me about 10 hours to find the fabric for my gingham skirt and even then I could only find 1 metre! I’ll give you some money when you come. Or I could repay you with some pattern making lessons :)

Got you some gingham fabric (3 × 2 meters, black, blue and red), hope you’ll like it. I’ll bring it with me when we come to Perth. Might have to ship it over though with the rest of my furniture / sewing machines (as there is only limited space in our suitcases), so it might take a while (we’re flying to Perth on 15 September, but the container will probably not arrive before end of October). Alternatively, I could mail it, whatever you prefer!

And some pattern making lessons would be awesome :)

Haha you’re too kind! Yes, I had some serious luck finding that fabric. It is truly delightful, I only wish I had a lot more of it.

What I’d REALLY like is some of that gorgeous cotton muslin that all of Jane’s characters wear! It’s such a shame you can’t get such beautiful fabric anymore :(

Hey, was reading your blog, but have no idea how to post there. For winter : definately go for the leggings (sorry not a fan of jeggings), because they will be basic to make – probably only two pieces with inner leg and crotch seams. Then you can make wonderful longlength tops or tunics/dresses and pair up great blouses, ankle boots or just ballet flats! PS if you do find the perfect pair of jeans – rigid denim is the secret, keep their shape all day and are a little more forgiving on the extra kilos (must be something in the water!)

Your shirtwaister has reminded me of a piece of fabric I have in my stash… its a charcoal wool/suiting piece with grape pin stripe… its really not for me and I’ve been holding onto it for quite a while. I’ll get the measurements and a photo to you if you like and if you want it, then its yours!

On the top of fabric stores…. if you live NOR you should try Fabulous Fabrics in Balcatta. They have a mezzanine floor which if totally bridal. What I do like is they stock more than your average fabric and the mannequins they use to show ideas for fabric use are often dressed in original designs not just commercial patterns. If you become a VIP you get something like 20-25% discount too

Yes I visit Fabulous Fabrics on a semi-regular basis… but it’s too expensive! And the daywear fabrics are pretty old lady. Everything seems to be at least $20/m, so by the time you buy 3 metres of something it’s $60… so you’re better off just buying a dress from Sportsgirl and save the bother of making it! I

If I had any money I’d totally open up a fabric shop.

I must say, awesome creations! I read a bit on your blog and saw you were writing about fabric stores in Perth. That was very convenient, as I am moving to Perth in September to work at UWA for 2.5 years. If you don’t mind, I might contact you again once I’ve moved, for inside information about cool stores etc. in Perth!

oh so so so much! I went so crazy I can’t even remember most of it!
      - ebay I’m waiting for 1930s art deco trim in cream, antique glass buttons, a hand embroidered broderie anglaise collar, vintage lemon embroidered linen (I actually look hideous in yellow… but I love it so much and I’ve convinced myself that this will suit me) and an antique hand embroidered white cotton lawn
      - I’ve also ordered heaps of ginghams and stripes from superbuzzy.com (I’m actually seriously considering putting in another order because I wanted so much stuff from there. Unfortunately it’s pretty expensive, but considering how ghastly Perth fabric shops are, it’s worth it!)

You should look at ebay. I get pretty much all my fabric from there and it’s really cheap!
