I am a complete novice when it comes to sewing, but my 10 year old daughter and I are determined to learn.

Our current project for her is one of the Burda Kids dress patterns 9431. We need to add the seam allowance of 1.5cm to it.

I have two questions regarding this;

1. Do I need to add a seam allowance to a line that is marked as a slash line i.e. it has a little scissor symbol on it?

2. Is it best to add seam allowance in the interfacing for the neck line or just cut out the exact size as printed on the pattern and just rely on the material for the seam allowance? For comfort I chose a lightweight interfacing so my instinct is to add the seam allowance.

All advice is welcome, many many thanks

    Could you attach a picture of the seam pattern along with this image please?

    Dear Kate, a slash line with a scissor symbol should be cut with no seam allowance.

    Maybe you have to put a little piece of cloth on it and sew around that on three sides before you cut it open (if mentioned in the instruction – also the size of the little piece would be mentioned then!) Just try it on some extra piece of fabric first to see what the pattern wants you to do. Sometimes you just have to have it in your hands to understand and then it’s logic… Good luck!

    About Interfacing I’m not sure I understand the question so I leave that for the experts ;))
