Are you a tech-saavy sewer and aspiring fashion designer? Learn how to bring your hand drawn garment sketches to the next level and computerize them for a more professional look.

On Monday, Nov. 25th, we’re bringing back one of our most-loved web seminars: How to Draw Garment Technical Drawings in Adobe Illustrator presented by the fabulous Meg Healy.

In Monday’s live web seminar, Meg will guide you through the process of drawing professional looking technical garment illustration using Adobe Illustrator. You will learn how to use the pen tool and different brushes to simulate machine stitches.

Have a fabric already but not sure how it will look exactly in your garment? You will also learn to copy your newly drawn technical drawings into Adobe Photoshop, scan your fabric into the computer and insert into your design! You can even take existing technical from BurdaStyle.com patterns and add style lines, and modify the details before you start to sew. This is a handy skill to have when developing new patterns, or testing out fabric/color combinations. Think of all the possibilities!

I bought this course and would rate it 2 out of 5 stars. The reason is that I have over 7 years experience with Illustrator and photoshop and some of the techniques that were shown in that webinar could be done in more effective and faster ways than what was used by the instructor. Some of the techniques in the video took way longer than they should and I had to fast forward those parts to get to the next step. However, for a beginner, I believe this webinar covers all the basics needed for a start off with Illustrator and Photoshop and would be very helpful and I highly recommend it. The part I had most doubts about was the application of the fabric to your technical. The instructor scans a 5×5 inch piece of the fabric and transfers it to photoshop to apply it to the technical, but then scales it to cover the whole garment, which in real life scale would be 5x if not more the size of that fabric patch. If that technique is only used for a preview then I believe it is very helpful. But if it is to show the end result then scaling should be taken into consideration.

From a software user point of view, I did not gain any new knowledge. But from fashion designing/sewing point of view, the new things I learnt from this webinar were the digital figure croquis, and that I can get technical garments online to modify according to my own designs, as well as the first part that gave an overview of technicals formats in the fashion industry and their uses. I will certainly start using this method to plan my designs and modify my downloaded Burda patterns and technicals. Thank you Meg Healy and Burdastyle :)

Is there a way to purchase web seminars after they happen? Would love to gain this skill, and it would be a shame to not have access to it

I had the same problem. Are you connected through facebook rather than through an account set up otherwise? That seems to be the issue that I am having.

Cannot register :(. Even after logging in to my account, I’m asked to log-in again for checkout. Then, it just won’t take my password. Tried numerous times. Sorry to be missing such a great class.
