I get a little sad when The Academy Awards end, since that means award season is coming to a close – but this year’s 90th show did not disappoint! This year I made a point to go and see most of the nominated pictures, which in my opinion makes it a little more fun to watch. Then of course we have the red carpet which is always exciting to see! Read on to see our favorite fashion trends spotted on the red carpet and how you can get the look…

90th Oscars Fashion BRIGHT WHITE

White on the red carpet always pops and this year stars like Jane Fonda, Mary J Blige, and Camilla Alves wore crisp white for the occasion. For this trend I also loved the necklines! Everything from angular to romantic and it all worked.

I know the saying is “Don’t wear white after Labor Day”, but when can we start wearing white? I say now is the time, so try sewing your next project in a nice white and get inspired with these patterns – first our V-Neck Gown and then our Kimono Dress for a more casual everyday look.

90th Oscars Fashion BOLD BOWS

Bows were back on the red carpet and I loved it! Whether big or small, on the back or the front, they all looked amazing. Nicole Kidman and Emma Stone opted for bows in the front while nominee Saoirse Ronan make her bow a back statement. Read online people were hit and miss about Emma’s casual approach, but I was into it! When your confident you can wear anything, and she really rocked that pant suit look.

90th Oscars Fashion BOLD BOWS Get the Look

Good thing Burda loves bows too! To get the look try sewing up our Bow Back Blouse for an everyday look and nod to this trend, or go big and make this V-Back Wedding Dress with Bow for your neck special occasion look.

90th Oscars Fashion HIGH NECKLINES

Another trend that was spotted was the use of high necklines. I personally love a good halter and turtleneck vibe, but sometimes it doesn’t always work. Emily blunt in the middle was my favorite look of the entire night, but Maya Rudolf was definitely my worst. Sandra Bullock also embraced this trend and looked fabulous as always.

90th Oscars Fashion HIGHT NECKLINES Get the Look

Embrace this trend all the way with our gorgeous Victorian Maxi Dress or nod to Sanda with this Halter Dress pattern.

90th Oscars Fashion VELVET

The guys really had a fashion moment as well on the red carpet and this year it was all about velvet! Stars like Armie Hammer, Ansel Elgort, and Daniel Kaluuya broke out the velvet and I love how they are all in different colors.

90th Oscars Fashion VELVET Get the Look

There is still enough chilly weather left of the season to sew and wear a velvet blazer! Love our Boy’s version here that you can make for your little one, and then also make one for yourself using this Cropped Velvet Jacket.

90th Oscars Fashion GOING FOR GOLD

You can always count to see some gold and glitter at the Oscars and stars like Jennifer Lawrence, Sally Hawkins, and Luptia Nyong’o glowed in gold with maxi silhouettes. Jennifer was another one of my best dressed picks of the evening.

90th Oscars Fashion GOING FOR GOLD Get the Look

Grab some gold fabric and get to it! Try using our Plus Size Off the Shoulder Dress for a glam look that you could even convert into a top, or get the party started with our Gold Party Dress!

90th Oscars Fashion TIGHT AND BRIGHT

Some stars were shining bright in these pops of color dresses. Everything from candy pink to bright blue draped over celebrities like Jennifer Garner, Viola Davie and Eiza Gonzalez – and I was digging it! Even loved the matchy look with Violia’s clutch.

90th Oscars Fashion TIGHT AND BRIGHT Get the Look

Everyone needs at least one new dress for the Spring and Summer, so why not make it bright? Try making our Slanted Seams Dress for an everyday look, or this Marilyn Halter Gown for a more dramatic occasion.

Who was your best dressed of the night?

Lovely Jane Fonda, Mary J Blige, Camilla Alves, Jennifer Lawrence, Lupita Nyong’o outfits. I adore the velvet jacket, but what can I do, living in Singapore. Leave it in the office? (crying)

I loved the Jennifer Lawrence dress! The colour and cut of Viola’s dress had me looking for pink sateen fabric to make something similar. Thanks for the sew the looks – I need to get the halter neck dress and make it :-)
