When it comes to sewing contests and competitions sometimes it feels like garments get all the love. I know we have tons of talented handbag designers out there, so listen up because we have an amazing opportunity for you guys!

The Independent Handbag Designer Awards is now accepting entries for its 2011 contest and we want you to enter. Simply head over to their website for all the details, including how you can submit your one-of-a-kind handbags and designs to categories such as Best Red Carpet Ready Evening Bag and Best Handmade Handbag. We’re sponsoring the Best Handmade category along with our friends at SINGER®, but BurdaStyle members are free to submit to any category.

Entries are due to IHDA by 11:59pm EST on April 30th, 2011. From there the industry’s top fashion and accessories bloggers will select 5 finalists in each category who will be notified on May 2nd. All finalists are invited to attend the official awards ceremony at the Time & Life Building in New York City on June 15th where a panel of esteemed fashion industry judges will announce the winners along with 2011 Iconoclast Award recipient Dooney & Bourke!

Not only will winners get the chance to show off their talents to a room full of the fashion industry heavy hitters, but winning bags will also be featured in the September 2011 issue of InStyle Magazine! Other prizes include features on the SINGER® and BurdaStyle websites, a limited-edition collection with Isabel Fiore, a collaboration with Timberland and much more! Read up on all the submission guidelines here and start designing those award winning bags!

I am a little confused too. I wouldn’t call myself a full time designer, do you have to own a company that produces handbags to enter? And are you required to make a full line of handbags?

So does this mean the person who wins the contest will design a whole collection of handbags? Sounds like a lot of work!
