Our first sew-along has finished! Can’t wait to do this all again!

Here it is! My version of the Plaid Jacket pattern from our very first BurdaStyle sew-along. I had such a great time putting this together and what made it even more fun was chatting with everyone in the comments and on social media.

What about you? How did yours go? Please share! Upload your project in your personal profile and link to it below so we can all “ooooh” and “aaaah”. :)

So here’s what I’m going to do different for next time: I’m going to work ahead so that I can include tips and process photos. And let’s add a hashtag (#burdasewalong) because doesn’t everything need a hashtag these days?

Anything you’d like to see different for next month’s sew-along? Let me know!

I’ll reveal November’s sew-along project this Sunday, November 3rd. I’m thinking a simple dress. (I love that some newbies have been joining us!) Let me know what BurdaStyle dresses you love that would be suitable.

A HUGE CONGRATULATIONS to all who participated in our very first sew-along! And if you didn’t have a chance to do the sew-along with us yet, but still want to, here are the blog posts for Week 1, Week 2, Week 3, and Week 4.)

Okay, so I have gotten done with the coat other than the lining. Now, I could forgo that, but it is such a nice wool that I used, I would feel like I cheated to not have it lined. I purchased some lining when I bought the fabric, however it is nylon and it melted when I tried to press it. So, that is definitely out! I am now looking online for some nice turquoise lining. FabricMart has a nice silk twill which I think I will order to finish off my coat. I am going to post a couple pictures of the “nearly” finished coat. You can’t really tell it is not all the way done, but the front band and sleeve cuffs are not sewn down inside, as it is waiting for the lining to be made and sewn to that. So, I guess you can look at my Burda page and see the pictures. I wish the photo did the fabric justice, but it just doesn’t!

Your coat looks great, mine goes nearly to my knees, I am short 5’4" but your coat fits you so much more closely. Did you drop a size or so when you made it from the size you normally would make?

I posted a question on Week 4 to clarify the sleeve band. Totally cryptic! Help if you can.

Lovely color on you and the belt is perfect! Great job Denise! I can’t wait to see what you pick for next time. I am so far behind but I am going to finish mine! Hopefully before Christmas ;) As for a dress, I have been drooling on the red bow front dress from the 08/2013 issue. It can be made with or without the bow, shortened to blouse length, or even made with an elastic waist. And the final lovely bit is with the dropped shoulders it would be easy to leave off the sleeves and make the dress or blouse appropriate for warmer weather. It looks fairly easy to construct too! Just my thoughts =) Has anyone made that pattern yet? How easy is it to sew up?

Hi Denise. Your jacket looks great! Can’t wait to see the next project. I have a few suggestions for winter dresses. These are not categorized as novice, but are a few of my favorites: http://www.burdastyle.com/pattern_store/patterns/vintage-bouclé-dress-122012 (also known as Très Chic -US W14); http://www.burdastyle.com/pattern_store/patterns/boucle-dress-022013. This was a cute one that is novice: http://www.burdastyle.com/pattern_store/patterns/shift-dress-092012.

It look’s really good Denise :D I love the fact that such a simple pattern can have such an elegant output! And the belt looks so fancy! I wish I had one like it :p I haven’t made my belt yet, so I might go for an elastic band as well!

For the next sew along, I suggest the Cowl Dress 10/2012 #118A. People in warm countries can use light fabric and make the sleeves/hem shorter, and those who face autumn can have a warm and elegant dress :)

    Happy sewing!

Your jacket looks fabulous, Denise!! I love it; it’s perfect on you!! I definitely like your idea to sew ahead of us next round because I would have LOVED to have seen how you put together that fabulous belt!!…Can’t wait to see what the dress pattern pick will be;)

I have my sew-along jacket finished and posted!! It was a ton of fun=) I made a few changes to make the pattern suit my fabric better…next time I probably wouldn’t deviate from the suggested fabric as much LOL. I posted the pics of my finished project on my blog: http://mademoisellemermaid.blogspot.com/2013/11/burdastyle-sew-along-jacket.html

I also posted it in my BurdaStyle studio, but unfortunately the pics are super-duper dark and saturated when I upload them there. http://www.burdastyle.com/projects/plaid-jacket-sew-along-my-oooh-la-la-jacket-in-bamboo-fleece ….Any ideas why that happens when I upload them? Thanks again for the fun sew-along project!!…Looking soooo forward to the next one!!

It’s amazing!!! It’s hard to notice at first that the pattern is the same, but the result, well you’re right: ooh la la!
      Congrats ;)

holy jeez-a-ma-cow your jacket is truly oooh-la-la! I love the color and victorian styling. It is a unique statement peice. It is wonderful! Are you going to post some tutorials on how to do that draw string waist and ruffles? Where did you find that bamboo fabric?
