Around Valentine’s Day in New York City, not only is love in the air – but also fashion! Funny enough that one of the biggest trends I spotted on the runway already was the use of red and pink fabrics together. Read on to see some of my favorite looks so far and how you can sew up the latest styles in time for Fall 2018…

Alexander Wang NYFW

I love Alexander Wang’s edgy take on basics in neutrals and this season he really played with zipper placement. He also showed some amazing tuxedo styles in the form of dresses as well as oversized blouses.

Wide Sleeve Boyfriend Blouse; Coat Dress

Sew up an over sized blouse, but crop it in the front and lengthen in the back so you can pair with high waisted short shorts, or a mini skirt. Put a tuxedo spin on your next dress project using our pictured above pattern, and even try tapering in the waist for a more fitted look.

Caroline Herrera NYFW

Carolina Herrera embraced fun fur accents in bright colors as well as a large number of maxi dress blouse looks which I think are so chic!

Inverted Maxi Skirt; Plus Size Pleated Maxi Skirt

To get this look pair any classic and crisp white blouse with a maxi skirt like this one. Pair with color accents and pops of faux fur trims.

Christian Siriano NYFW

Christian Siriano always brings such elegance to the runway and this collection did not disappoint! He also embraced the colorful fur trend, but incorporated velvet prints in flouncy silhouettes.

Christian Get the Look
Wrap Coat; High Neck Maxi Dress; Off the Shoulder Ruffle Dress

If you only make one garment for next fall, it needs to be a colorful (and fuzzy) wrap coat, and this pattern is perfect.

Jeremy Scott

Jeremy Scott is one of my all time favorite fashion designers. I love all the risks he takes, the fun bright fabrics he uses, and always the theme/inspiration behind each collection. This runway show for me, was all about the fine details. My favorites were the spotty faux fur bits (I immediately thought this is how I can use up my fur bits), and the zig-zap topstitching. The pink leather suit is just perfect with that contrasting zig-zagging, and I’m so inspired to do this. Then I also got a kick out of the terry cloth sweater bra, probably not something I would make or wear, but I love it.

Prabal Gurung NYFW

Prabal Gurung shows such elegant but edgy pieces, and also showcased that faux fur trim trend. Just look at that sweater dress, now THAT is a sweater that I could feel glamorous in. Velvet was spotted again in this collection, and this time head to toe in a turtle neck – maxi skirt combination.

Long Fur Waistcoat; Skirt from Sew News Pattern Play Column Dec/Jan 2018 issue

When I saw the middle look come down the runway I instantly thought of this waistcoat pattern, and all the faux fur trimmed pieces brought a smile to my face since I wrote about this style in my Pattern Play column for the Dec/Jan 2018 issue of Sew News Magazine! I also made the turtle neck, and now I’m thinking about making another in mustard velvet.

Red and Pink Trend NYFW 1
Christian Siriano; Anna Sui; Sies Marjan

Now let’s talk about all the pink and red pieces I saw at various shows. Tons of this combination, and I’m really digging it.

Red and Pink Trend NYFW 2
Tibi; Self-Portrait; Prabal Gurung

Designers created prints with these colors as the dominant shades, and also color blocked looks with separate red and pink pieces.

Below are some patterns to get you inspired and incorporate this trend in your next handmade garment:
