This week I worked on the pants portion of my jumpsuit and then sew it all together with the invisible zipper! I love how this jumpsuit is coming together and I also go over hand stitching the bodice lining in place. Who else is sewing this jumpsuit pattern from the 05/2018 issue?

Step 1

Last week I finished up sewing the bodice of my jumpsuit complete with the lining and back – so now it’s time for the bottoms! First thing to to was to pleat the fronts and baste into place.

Step 2

To construct the pockets, I first placed the pocket pouch piece right sides together with the pocket line and pinned.

STep 3

Then I stitched together and under-stitched the allowances to the pocket pouch side.

Step 4

I grabbed the pocket backing piece and pinned together with the pouch around the curved edges. After stitching together, I serge-finished the allowances together.

Step 5

To finish the pocket, I matching up the pocket line with the waist marking on the backing piece as well as the side seam.

Step 6

View from the wrong side, with my pocket edges basted in place along the waist and side seams.

Step 7

Before stitching the crotch seam together, I serge-finished the crotch curves and inseams separately so I could press the seam allowances open.

Step 8

I also sewed the other pocket in place and press my front crotch seam open.

Step 9

View from the right side!

Step 10

For the back bottoms, I first pinned the darts right sides together from waist to dart tip.

Step 11

I stitched and then pressed my dart intakes towards the center back.

Step 12

Once the darts were sewn, I serge-finished all around the back piece and pinned together the back crotch to the zipper notch.

Step 13

After I stitched and pressed open my back crotch seam, I pinned my inseams together matching up crotch points and sewed together from hem to hem.

Step 14

I also sewed together my pant side seams, and pressed open. Now I could attach the bodice to my pants! I pinned together matching up side seams, centers, and the back darts with the bodice seams. Then I stitched together.

Step 15

I left the seam allowances unfinished and pressed up towards the bodice since the lining will cover this seam. Loving how it is looking so far!

Step 16

Now it was time for my invisible zippers, so I first pressed the zipper teeth away from the tape and pinned to the back edge of my jumpsuit.

Step 17

I extended and sewed the top allowance of my invisible zipper to the lining so that the top zipper stop was exactly at the bodice/lining seam.

Step 18

The tops of the zipper will be sewn to the back of the zipper on the wrong side.

Step 19

Yes! Matching waist seams on either side of my zipper. I also switched to a piping foot to sew the small space between the bottom of my zipper and the zipper notch.

Step 20

For the bodice lining, with the bottom seam allowances still pressed upwards, I pinned right sides together with the center back. The invisible zipper is sandwiched between the bodice and lining. I then sewed together close to the zipper attachment seam and flipped to the right side clipping the top corner where the zipper stop was.

Step 21

To secure the lining, I first pinned the pressed edge over my jumpsuit waist seam allowance.

Step 22

Then I slip stitched by hand to the waist seam from center back to center back.

All I have to do now is attach the straps to the back and finish the bottom hems with a band out of my patterned fabric. Next week I’ll finish that all up and debut my finished and photographed jumpsuit! Did you make this pattern as well? Make sure to upload it to the projects section and link to the pattern so I can see and feature.

Happy Sewing!

Hi! I actually didn’t – although my height is short (I’m about 5’ 3"), my torso carries most of my height and I have short stubby legs haha, so I don’t usually shorten the torso/waist seam in this case. Just the legs needed lots of hemming! So it really depends on where you carry your height.

    Best, Meg
