I’ve been having lots of fun making doll clothes lately. My youngest niece will be receiving several complete outfits and accessories for her American Girl dolls. My daughter and I enjoy making bags & purses together. My sisters and nieces have all recieved one of those.

I love making dresses to wear but making garments for others is joyful. I love seeing their faces when they open a present that I have imagined and made for them.

I love to make dresses, because when you’re done, you’re done! I like not having to coordinate with the rest of my wardrobe, although I want to do a better job of making clothing in the context of my wardrobe in 2012.

Dresses are always my favorite projects because unlike tops, skirts, or pants, when I finish a dress I have a complete outfit. I am beginning to enjoy making things for the home as well.

Skirts are my favorite thing to sew. I am an intermediate sewer and (for me) skirts are the least difficult item to fit. I also enjoy making skirts because there is such a wide range of possibilities, from light and float-y to a nicely tailored wool pencil skirt. The skirts I’ve made have been a foundation of my wardrobe and really expanded it. I think that there is no garment so versatile as a skirt!

My favorite thing to make is an outfit for myself because I can determine the look and make great use of it for work, social occasions, or lounging at home. Making clothing is empowering for someone who loves fashion. I don’t have to depend on the limits of what’s offered in the stores and be held back by my tight budget.
