[UPDATED, August 17, 2011] Start gearing up National Sewing Month by joining BurdaStyle, Coats & Clark, Tula Pink, and FreeSpirit Fabrics for our awesome September Sew Along! Hosted by designer Tula Pink and featuring the sewing talents of some familiar BurdaStyle faces, Peter Lappin and Gretchen Hirsch, each week in September we’ll be posting new steps, tips and techniques to guide you through creating two of our fantastic patterns: the Skirt with Front Pleats and the Halter Dress!

We are so excited about this month-long project and we want you to get excited too! Featuring two of our favorite BurdaStyle patterns as well as loads of tips and techniques for all skill levels, you’re sure to learn something new or spark a creative idea. So download your pattern, grab your materials and mark your calendars for September 1st so you can join us for the FreeSpirit Fabrics and Coats & Clark BurdaStyle Sew Along!

Update: Thank you for your feedback! We of course want to include as many BurdaStylers as possible in this sew along! The dress and skirt pattern we are using are recommendations, but by no means must you use these patterns to be involved in this sew along! If the patterns we’ll be making aren’t available in your size, these are our suggestions:

-Try your hand at grading (pattern sizing). This could be a opportunity to achieve the perfect fit by tailoring the pattern to your exact measurements. For reference, check out these awesome (and surprisingly simple) tutorials: A Simple Way to Enlarge a Simple Pattern, Full Bust Adjustment for Princess Seams, Enlarge a Basic BurdaStyle Pattern, Grade a Bodice Pattern to a Larger Size, and Make a Pattern Larger or Smaller.

-Choose a different pattern in a similar style. We selected these two patterns for their simplicity in construction as well as their cuteness! Look around for a similar style in your size. There are a few burda style magazine patterns that have similar princess seam construction as the dress, but with different details. These patterns are available in sizes 44-52: 5/2010 Shift Dress, 07/2011 Bustier Dress, and 07/2011 Off the Shoulder Dress .

Our friends at FreeSpirit Fabrics and Coats & Clark have also recommended the following patterns to try:

Butterick: B4461, B5574 (Plus)
Simplicity: 2475, 2152, 3688 (Plus)

Butterick: B5457, B5461 (Plus)
Simplicity: 2176, 2247 (Plus)
McCalls: M6349, M6085 (Plus)

Let’s get sewing!

I LOVE LOVE LOVE the Prince Charming Collection! I just bought voile in Indigo Dandelion and the Aqua Snail one to make some 1930s style pajamas. Seeing Tula Pink on here makes me love her even more – she’s great! And now I totally want to participate in the Sew Along!

    These are very pretty.

However, neither in plus sizes, eh? :/ Slightly unhappy with that. I guess I can find a similar dress or skirt pattern and participate, but still.

It doesn’t really seem fair. Perhaps you could email the admins. Maybe they can add a plus pattern & find someone to do the step by step with it.

I know that is right. Not every woman is a size 10. Us plus size woman like great clothes that shows off our curves as well even if we have a lil more.

Here Here! I too was excited about this only to find out my size (20) isn’t part of the sew-along.

Surely Burda can fix this one, easily.

      Pretty Please?

I would love to participate in this, but seeing as I’m going away from my beloved sewing machine for college, I will have to sit out on this one. Maybe next year! Hopefully This can be arranged for june or july next year? I would love, love, love to be apart of this.

      Hey baka-pepica,

We have two options for this sew along, you can sew the skirt or the dress. If you’d like a challenge – do both!

I would love to participate, too bad I’ll be gone from all of civilization for the first 3 weeks of September. Maybe I’ll try and join in at the very end, as long as I don’t have too many things to organize before uni starts up again. Also, I love the print of that fabric, I just can’t imagine it as a piece of clothing, would make an adorable cushion though!
